Newcastle United's under-23s qualified for the knockout stages of the Premier League Cup with a 3-0 victory over their Southampton counterparts.

Luke Charman reacted quickest in the box to open the scoring for the hosts before the striker was taken off on a stretcher following a nasty collision with Tom O'Connor.

Yannick Touré's double in the late stages of the cup clash ensured Newcastle maintained top spot in Group H with eleven points, moving four clear of the Saints with a game to spare.

In poor conditions, with one point separating the two sides prior to kick-off, Ben Dawson's side - top of Group H ahead of the game - knew a victory over the Saints would send the young Magpies into the round of 16.

United went in search of an early opener, with Touré heading narrowly wide. After a lofted ball into the penalty area, Charman diverted his headed pass into the path of the Swiss forward, who steered his attempt wide of the far post.

Southampton's Will Ferry went close to punishing United's miss  after the midfielder darted into the penalty area past United captain Owen Bailey but, with only Nathan Harker to beat, lost his footing at the crucial moment and steered his effort into the side netting.

Charman opened the scoring in the 28th minute, latching onto a loose ball following Rosaire Longelo's inviting free kick, and the 21-year-old made no mistake from inside the penalty area who drove his effort into the top right-hand corner.

Sadly, the goalscorer was forced off before the first-half whistle with the forward left in serious pain, falling badly as a result of challenging for a high ball with the Saints skipper.

In the second half, Tom Allan almost netted an impressive solo strike for Newcastle while Matty Longstaff's long-range free kick was brilliantly tipped around the post by Southampton's Jack Rose.

As the cup tie approached its final stages, Touré, who netted twice in the Northumberland Senior Cup quarter-final against Blyth Spartans on Tuesday, continued his bright form in front of goal.

His first goal came after excellent work from Longelo, who powered past Christoph Klarer before drawing a dangerous cross from the byline into the path of Touré, with the forward taking a quick first touch before unleashing a low drive past Rose.

The teenager made sure of the three points, sliding the ball into the bottom corner to grab his second brace in consecutive matches, sealing an impressive victory for the Magpies.
