Newcastle United U23 2 Leeds United U23 0
Newcastle United Under-23s claimed a 2-0 victory over their Leeds United counterparts in the Premier League Cup on Friday night.
Elias Sørensen netted his 17th goal of the season after finishing off a wonderful attacking move from the young Magpies before substitute Adam Wilson sealed maximum points in stoppage time.
Ben Dawson's side now join Group H leaders Southampton on seven points and move four points clear of Leeds with three games remaining.
After a lack of clear cut chances in the opening half-hour, Newcastle took the lead through the in-form Sørensen, who returned to the starting line-up after scoring the winner against Stoke's second-string on Monday night.
The move began from defence, with a low through ball from Owen Bailey finding Tom Allan. After racing up the wing, the midfielder played a low first time cross across the face of goal into Sørensen's path, with the Dane drilling the ball past Kamil Miazek to grab his sixth goal in his last five matches.
Leeds almost found an equaliser on the stroke of half-time as Leif Davis' dangerous cross into the penalty found an unmarked Kun Mihaylov but the forward was unable to turn the ball past Nathan Harker.
In the second half, Mihaylov went close once again for the Whites but his low driven effort from the edge of the penalty area crept past the right hand post.
Leeds continued their attacking threat as another inviting cross from Davis flew across the six-yard area before Izzy Brown fired wide of the target.
Despite the pressure, Newcastle looked to have added a second five minutes from time. As Matthew Longstaff advanced past a couple of defenders, the central midfielder's effort was blocked only to fall into the path of Wilson.
Although the teenager was on hand on to slot the ball into the net, the effort was ruled out for offside. However, Wilson was not to be denied as he got onto the scoresheet moments later.
The youngster advanced into the penalty area before unleashing a fierce drive under the body of Miazek to wrap up three valuable points for the Magpies.
