United's second-string trailed on the half-hour mark of the cup clash at Whitley Park following Kian Harratt's penalty for the young Terriers.

The young Magpies, however, responded brightly in the second-half through Jay Turner-Cooke's deflected finish shortly after the restart, the teenage winger's third goal of the campaign at under-23 level.

Newcastle's youngsters, who reached the 2019 Premier League Cup final, were unable to find an all-important winner to move level with Town on six points, with Dylan Stephenson seeing a flicked effort cleared off the line.

Elliott Dickman made three changes to the side which suffered a 6-3 defeat at Mansfield Town in the Papa John's Trophy as 17-year-old centre back Harry Barclay was handed his debut at under-23 level, replacing Charlie Wiggett, while midfield duo Jay Turner-Cooke and Kyle Crossley were named in the starting XI.

After an even opening, United's Turner-Cooke produced the maiden opportunity in front of goal as the 17-year-old midfielder, who joined the Magpies' youth set-up from Sunderland in January, saw a curling strike comfortably held by Huddersfield goalkeeper Ryan Schofield.

Joe White, who made his Magpies first-team debut during a pre-season friendly against Rotherham United in July, went close to netting his second goal in as many games but the 19-year-old midfielder flashed his volley wide of the target.

In the 29th minute, Newcastle were dealt a difficult blow after falling behind through Harratt's penalty. After Barclay was adjudged to have fouled Midgley inside the box following a dangerous lofted pass, Harratt was left to convert from 12 yards, despite Dan Langley guessing the correct way.

The hosts went close to levelling before the half-time whistle as Joe White's threaded pass was played into Kyle Crossley's path but the 17-year-old's strike was blocked by the rushing Loick Ayina.

In the 50th minute, United claimed an equaliser as Turner-Cooke continued his bright form in front of goal. After Crossley's initial effort was blocked by Schofield, midfielder Lucas De Bolle directed the ball into Turner-Cooke's path, who fired the ball home.

Stephenson went agonisingly close to recording his 11th goal of the season in all competitions as the Blyth-born teenager managed to direct Crossley's cross-cum shot towards goal but the effort was hacked off the line.

Langley, who made his first-team debut for his boyhood club against York City during pre-season, produced a crucial save to deny Jaheim Headley, getting down quickly to push the ball away from danger.

Matt Bondswell, who joined the Magpies in March following his departure from RB Leipzig, almost netted his first goal for the club after latching onto a loose ball on the edge of the box but the Nottingham-born left-back's vicious drive flew narrowly over the crossbar.

In the dying minutes, Langley produced another vital stop, blocking Connor Shank's drilled effort with his left hand to, ultimately, secure a point.
