Neil Winskill's side took an early lead in the Under-18 Premier League North clash through Jamie Miley's impressive volley before the hosts drew level through Ty Barnett's strike shortly after the restart.

Despite falling behind in the latter stages of the contest through Barnett's brace, the young Magpies responded in quick fashion to secure a point, their first of the 2021/22 campaign, through Miley's close-range header.

In the 13th minute, Newcastle broke the deadlock in terrific style as Miley, captaining the under-18 outfit, chested down a headed clearance from distance before striking an excellent volley which looped into the net.

The Toon teenagers maintained their advantage 15 minutes later as Owen Farmer intercepted the ball from the Newcastle defence but saw his lowly driven shot cleared off the line before the rebound was blocked.

Three minutes into the second-half, Wolves drew level through Barnett as the forward cut inside after picking the ball up from Nathan Fraser's low cross from the right flank before slotting home. 

In the 76th minute, the West Midlands outfit took the lead as Barnett grabbed his and his side's second of the afternoon, pulling away from his marker before firing past teenage goalkeeper Max Thompson, who started for United's under-23 side in last week's Premier League 2 draw against Reading.

The lead lasted for a matter of minutes, though, as Miley levelled for the visitors in the 79th minute. After Kyle Crossley's lofted cross from the right flank found the central midfielder inside the six-yard area, the captain made no mistake after heading home to earn a point.

After suffering a heavy 8-3 home defeat against their Burnley counterparts last week, conceding five second-half goals, Neil Winskill was pleased with his side's response against Wolves.

"We were really happy with the performance, certainly after the week before which was a bit of a freak second-half performance and result," he told nufc.co.uk.

"It was really important that the lads showed character and bounced back from the disappointment of last week. I think that performance went some way to getting that out of our system.

"In any game, it's important to score first. Confidence takes a hit and the lads would have been a bit apprehensive so to get the first goal and give them a boost and something to build upon set us up nicely and I thought we performed well in the first-half.

"When Wolves scored their second, it was another good examination of your character and it shows this group have that, being able to dig in and fight for each other." 

On Jamie Miley's performance, Winskill added: "We scored two great goals. Jamie is a very consistent performer and a player who epitomises working hard and training well and taking on board information from the staff.

"His two goals were a reflection of that. We've done a lot of work on his positioning when the crosses are coming in and that's where he gets his first goal from.

"We've also done work on our midfield players getting into the box and that's where he scores his second from so it's a good example to the lads there is a player who has took on board what has been asked of him."
