A brace from leading goalscorer Michael Ndiweni earned Newcastle United Under-18s a share of the spoils against Manchester City on Saturday.

United battled hard in difficult conditions at Little Benton, with heavy rain disrupting the flow of a hard-fought contest on Tyneside.

But after a sustained spell of City pressure early on, which saw the visitors strike the woodwork, the Magpies took the lead in spectacular fashion.

The goal came courtesy of Ndiweni, whose work just inside the City half saw him reclaim possession before setting his sights on goal. From 40 yards out, the frontman spotted goalkeeper George Murray-Jones off his line and executed his chip to pefection, handing the hosts an eye-catching advantage.

They held their lead until eight minutes after the restart, when Liam Smith turned home past Max Thompson to level the scores.

And before the hour the visitors moved in front when Kian Breckin’s low effort rolled in beyond his grasp.

United rallied, however, and 12 minutes from time they found a leveller. It owed much to the work of lively winger Kyle Crossley on the left flank, who scampered on to a long ball to create the chance.

Crossley, who netted his side's leveller at Everton last weekend, sent over an inviting, dangerous low cross into the middle and Ndiweni took advantage of it, stealing in to steer home an equaliser and earn his side a deserved point.

Newcastle United Under-18s: Max Thompson, Josh Stewart, Beau Beresford (Joel Green 78), Nathan Robertson (Shaun Mavididi 70), Harry Barclay, Ellis Stanton, Callum McNally, Jamie Miley, Michael Ndiweni, Lewis Miley, Kyle Crossley.

Subs not used: Steven Bessent, Johnny Emerson.
