United's under-18s beaten on Merseyside

With the game coming less than 48 hours after United's FA Youth Cup quarter-final against Tottenham, Dave Watson made wholesale changes for the fixture against the side he represented with such distinction during his playing career.

But Newcastle put in a decent display at Finch Farm, despite the Toffees coming out on top with a goal in each half.

Coached by former Magpies midfielder Kevin Sheedy, Everton went ahead in the 24th minute through Alex Denny, and they wrapped up the three points six minutes from time, with Miko Virtanen on target.

Newcastle entertain Middlesbrough on Friday (kick-off 11am).

Newcastle United Under-18s: Ben Smith, Kieren Aplin (Yannick Aziakonou 68), Craig Spooner, Gideon Adu-Peprah, Lewis Cass, Mace Goodridge (Jack Robson 59), Daniel Lowther, Callum Smith, Kelland Watts, Elias Sorensen (Isaac Gamblin 82), Mackenzie Heaney
