Goals from Bridget Galloway, Becky Ferguson and Cara Milne-Redhead gave Newcastle United Women a comfortable 3-0 win over West Bromwich Albion on Saturday evening.

Galloway got the Magpies going at St. James' Park, steering home from point-blank range in the first half, before late efforts from substitutes Ferguson and Milne-Redhead made sure of the victory in the friendly as the hosts rounded off a successful day for the club, with the men's team having beaten Fiorentina in the Sela Cup earlier in the day.

In a largely even first period, United made the better start. Tyler Dodds saw her effort blocked, Galloway fired over and Elysia Boddy sent a powerful strike wide of the upright as the hosts sought an opener.

Apart from a fleeting sight of goal for Janelle Staker, who couldn't direct her header goalwards, West Brom rarely threatened the Magpies' solid back three, with Olivia Watt, Charlotte Potts and Jodie Bartle giving little away. Another attack saw Galloway evade the Baggies' backline but pull her shot past the post, before another Boddy attempt from range was well held by goalkeeper Lucy Jones.

Three minutes before the break, though, the opener arrived. It was a deserved one for Becky Langley's side and for forward Galloway, whose industry leading the line had posed problems for the visitors. Emma Kelly's cross was met by Anna Soulsby at the back post and the winger's effort looked like it was heading in before Galloway made sure, finding the roof of the net to give Newcastle a half time lead.

Kelly tried her luck from 25 yards after the restart but found Jones equal to it as United again began on the front foot, despite the loss of defender Bartle to injury. Galloway almost grabbed a second out of nothing as she pressed Jones, who laboured over clearing a backpass and was nearly punished for it, but just about managed to recover and reclaim the loose ball.

On the hour, Soulsby was again denied as her close-range effort following a corner was scrambled off the goalline in front of the Gallowgate End and centre back Potts took aim with a speculative 40-yarder which was comfortably kept out by Jones, who was much the busier goalkeeper throughout. After a knock-down by substitute Kacie Elson at the far post another defender, Olivia Watt, tried her luck, but her snapshot flashed just wide.

Elson miscued from a deep Kelly cross soon after and Galloway blasted over after a defensive error from the Baggies, before the lively striker saw a brilliantly-taken goal ruled out for offside after latching on to Potts' lofted pass over the top before finishing confidently.

But eight minutes before the end, they finally grabbed their second. Two substitutes combined well for it; Jasmine McQuade's neat pass was perfect for Ferguson, whose first-time finish gave Jones little chance.

Ferguson could even have had a second in the closing minutes as she rattled the woodwork from a tight angle, but seconds later it was three. Milne-Redhead's strike from the edge of the box crept under Jones and added further gloss to the scoreline, as Langley's charges maintained their unbeaten record in pre-season.

Newcastle United Women: Hannah Reid (Grace Donnelly 65); Olivia Watt (Sharna Wilkinson 77), Jodie Bartle (Naomi Bedeau 50), Charlotte Potts, Tyler Dodds (Erin Nelson 77), Amber-Keegan Stobbs (Grace Boyes 77), Hannah Greenwood (Jasmine McQuade 65), Emma Kelly (Cara Milne-Redhead 77), Elysia Boddy, Anna Soulsby (Kacie Elson 65), Bridget Galloway (Becky Ferguson 77)
