Newcastle United Women have been eliminated from the Adobe Women's FA Cup after a 5-0 fourth-round defeat against Manchester United Women in front of 4,731 supporters at Leigh Sports Village.

Roared on by more than 1,000 travelling fans, Becky Langley's side put in a spirited performance against last season's FA Cup runners-up, with a Nikita Parris brace and goals from Ella Toone, Rachel Williams and Melvine Malard ultimately earning Marc Skinner's team a place in the next stage of the competition.

Toone went close for the Women's Super League giants within minutes of kick-off, taking aim from the edge of the box before her shot was deflected wide.

Parris then headed over from Toone's cross, as the hosts looked to impose themselves on the Magpies.

Next, Parris looked to break in behind for the Reds, but a combination of Charlotte Potts and Amber-Keegan Stobbs thwarted the forward.

Geyse sliced a volley wide before Emma Kelly led a Newcastle break but was taken down by Maya Le Tissier.

The Magpies found their feet before Toone struck from just inside the box, but Grace Donnelly reacted superbly to turn the midfielder's fierce strike onto the post.

Langley's team came forward again, with Georgia Gibson's scuffed effort almost falling to Bridget Galloway inside the box.

The hosts threatened once more, with Toone pulling the ball to Parris, whose left-footed shot went over the crossbar.

Parris was then denied by Donnelly after twisting in the box, with the Newcastle keeper reacting well to save the striker's effort.

But just before the hour mark, the Magpies' resilience was broken as Toone struck a left-footed shot into the top corner.

Parris doubled the lead, nodding in Toone's cross at the back post.

On the stroke of half time, Parris headed in another, from Hannah Blundell's delivery, but the striker was adjudged to have strayed offside.

After the restart, Katie Zelem tried her luck with a left-footed strike from the edge of the box that went wide.

The Magpies offered a threat down the other end of the pitch, with Gibson finding space down the right before her cross was held by Mary Earps, but it was the hosts who struck next.

Le Tissier's hoisted cross to the back post was punched away by Donnelly but only as far as Lucia Garcia, who squared the ball to Parris for her second of the match.

Langley made changes off the bench to try and turn the tide of the match in Newcastle's favour, but it was a Manchester United substitute who made it 4-0 to the Reds on 70 minutes.

Malard - also off the bench - broke down the right and drilled a ball into the path of fellow second-half introduction Leah Galton. The winger flicked the ball back to Williams, whose curling effort struck the crossbar before she connected with the follow-up to score.

Katie Barker broke into the box down the left, with Newcastle looking to reduce the deficit, but the hosts were able to clear her attempted centre before it caused Earps any trouble.

As the game entered the closing stages, Zelem tried her luck again, firing over the bar from the edge of the box.

Galloway then broke in behind the Manchester United backline but, with the striker heading towards goal, the attack was halted for offside.

As the match crept into injury time, Malard headed home Zelem's corner to add a fifth for the hosts.

After the full-time whistle blew, Langley, her staff and the Newcastle players headed towards the away section, who had been vocal throughout, to applaud the fans who made the trip to Leigh Sports Village for the historic fixture.
