Newcastle United Women 2 Barnsley Women 1

Second-half strikes from Georgia Gibson and Sharna Wilkinson were enough to see Newcastle United Women into the third round of the Vitality Women's FA Cup, with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Barnsley Women in front of more than 28,000 supporters - a new record for the competition outside of the final.

Becky Langley's side trailed at half time, as a long-range strike from Barnsley's Emily Pierrepont saw the visitors take the lead, despite the early pressure of the hosts.

However, Georgia Gibson's superb effort and another sublime strike from substitute Sharna Wilkinson turned the game on its head and ensured a vital win, and progression into the next round.

The Lady Magpies appeared unfazed by the size of the support and started the match the better of the two sides, with Lauren Robson finding Daisy Burt down the right, before the full-back delivered a dangerous low cross which narrowly evaded Katie Barker in the middle.

Barnsley responded, with Nat Shaw beating Freya Bailes before delivering from the right. The ball pinballed in the box, and behind for a Newcastle goal kick.

Langley's side continued to probe in the opening stages but United lacked the cutting edge to really trouble Barnsley. A couple of opportunities presented themselves to Barker and Gibson, but they were adjudged to have strayed offside on both occasions.

Despite Newcastle's pressure, the visitors broke the deadlock, when Pierrepont picked up the ball on the edge of the box and fired beyond Grace Donnelly.

The Lady Magpies almost had an instant response through Barker, but the striker saw her lofted effort stopped by Serena Clarke.

Barker again went close with 24 minutes on the clock, turning on the edge of the box after being found by Ellie Dobson and firing a powerful strike across goal which was turned behind by Clarke.

The waves of attack continued, as Burt picked out Gibson with a cross, but United's number ten could only turn her effort over the crossbar.

After going behind, Langley's side dominated proceedings in the first half, but Barnsley stood firm defensively to maintain their lead going in at the break.

The start of the second half followed a similar pattern as the first, as United looked to impose themselves on the visitors.

Rebecca Fevers went close with a long-range free-kick just five minutes after the restart, but Donnelly was able to adjust well and tip the ball over the crossbar.

The Barnsley defence continued to frustrate the Lady Magpies throughout the second half, but Gibson possessed the key to unlocking it, firing a superb effort over Clarke from 25 yards to draw Newcastle level.

Just moments later, the Magpies number ten almost had her and United's second, but she lifted her effort over the bar following a great through ball from Barker.

On 72 minutes, substitute Wilkinson edged Newcastle in front with another long-range effort which looped over Clarke and in off the post.

The waves of attack continued, with Gibson again going through one-on-one from a Barker pass, but Clarke was able to palm her shot and collect.

Both sides looked for further goals in the closing stages, but Newcastle were able to control possession and see the game out, ensuring a spot in the hat for the next round.
