Newcastle United Women have been crowned FA Women's National League Division One North champions after Becky Langley's side defeated Barnsley Women at Wombwell Recreation Ground on Sunday afternoon.

Goals from Kacie Elson and Katie Barker in either half sealed the win, which saw Newcastle Women's fans swarm the pitch to celebrate the achievement.

The Magpies started the game with purpose, with Erin Nelson and Elson both looking to influence proceedings from wide areas.

Georgia Gibson had the game's first clear-cut chance, forcing Serena Clarke into a save from a long-range free-kick.

With ten minutes on the clock, Langley's side had another opportunity, but when Beth Guy ghosted in at the back post, she couldn't turn Gibson's corner home.

The Magpies continued to press, with Elson finding joy down the left, but Barnsley's defence stood firm against the pacey winger.

On 18 minutes, Rachel Lee struck a right-footed effort from the edge of the box that was turned behind by Clarke.

Emily Pierrepont went close to opening the scoring soon after, but Newcastle goalkeeper Grace Donnelly was out quickly at her feet to deny the Barnsley forward.

Moments later, Daisy Burt clipped a superb cross to the back post, but Bianca Owens was a hair's breadth from getting the telling touch.

Newcastle continued to press, with Burt's cross being headed down by Owens before Clarke turned Gibson's rasping effort over the crossbar.

Jodie Snelson next went close, with the Barnsley centre-back turning a long free-kick over the bar with a header.

But after 37 minutes, the deadlock was broken. Burt's long ball found Nelson in behind and her low cross was turned in expertly by Elson, giving the Magpies the advantage.

Newcastle had a good opportunity to double the lead immediately after the restart on the counter-attack, but Gibson's cross-shot was comfortably held by Clarke.

Pierrepont was next to try her luck, hitting a shot from distance that was gathered by Donnelly.

With 65 minutes on the clock, Langley's side continued their search for a second goal. Keira Skelton lofted a cross to the back post, but substitute Millie Bell headed over.

Soon after, Gibson's corner came through to Guy and the midfielder struck the foot of the post.

Barker almost made an impact shortly after being introduced, latching onto a rogue back pass before being denied by Clarke at a tight angle.

But in the dying moments, she wasn't to be denied, reacting first after her initial shot and Elson's follow-up were thwarted, extending the Magpies' lead to two.

Jubilant scenes followed the full-time whistle, with fans and players rejoicing together after a hard-fought and ultimately successful campaign that sees Langley's team move up into the third tier of women's football.
