Newcastle United Women 4 Stockport County Ladies 1

Newcastle United Women finished 2021 in devastating fashion, emerging 4-1 winners over Stockport County Ladies in their FA Women's National League Division One North fixture on Sunday

Despite going a goal down early on, Becky Langley's side fought back and a brace from Katie Barker and goals from Beth Guy and debutant Erin Nelson sealed the win.

The result means that the Lady Magpies finish 2021 sitting second in the FAWNL Division One North, eight points behind leaders Liverpool Feds, but having played two matches less.

The first half was a cagey affair, with both sides failing to create many clear-cut chances. However, it was the visitors who hit first, taking the lead after nine minutes.

The Lady Magpies reacted well to the early set-back, and Olivia Watt thought she had equalised after 16 minutes, only for it to be ruled offside.

Newcastle Women continued to push for a leveller as the half progressed, and Barker almost had it two minutes before half time. The striker worked herself some space inside the box, but her goalbound strike was saved well by the Stockport goalkeeper.

The Lady Magpies continued to apply pressure on the visitors in the second half, with both Lauren Robson and Rachel Lee going close with efforts.

Just after the hour mark, Newcastle Women were level through Barker, who confidently rounded the goalkeeper before slotting home.

Langley's squad dominated the second half, and they were ahead after 75 minutes as Barker grabbed her second of the match, beating two defenders before finishing past the goalkeeper.

Just three minutes later, Guy put the Lady Magpies in the driving seat, hammering home a half volley from just outside the penalty area.

And with five minutes to go, debutant Nelson capped off the impressive comeback from Newcastle Women, striking into the bottom corner after breaking beyond the Stockport defence.
