United's women are out of the FA Women's National League Cup after an extra-time defeat to Brighouse Town Women on Sunday.

Kacie Elson's 86th-minute strike had forced the extra 30 minutes against a side who play a league above the Lady Magpies, but Becky Langley's side eventually slipped to only their second defeat of the season in all competitions.

The visitors took the lead in the 34th minute when Ellie White raced onto Monique Watson's flick and slid the ball beyond Grace Donnelly

Georgia Gibson was desperately unlucky not to level in the 53rd minute when her effort hit the inside of a post before being cleared, before Katie Barker forced Isobel Pare into a good save soon afterwards.

But with just four minutes of the 90 remaining, Gibson's corner was forced home by Elson before both sides came close to scoring in the final seconds - Drew Greene hitting the woodwork for Brighouse and then Barker shooting straight at Pare.

However, the away side came out on top in extra time, with Rosie Missen scoring an unfortunate own goal and Leah Embley sealing her team's passage to the next round.

Manager Langley has been clear all season that trying to win promotion from FAWNL Division One North is the priority for her side, but admitted: "The result is hard to bear after working so hard and battling into extra time.

"Yet again, I cannot fault this team's never-give-in attitude. It is definitely the nature of the best that in football you have to deal with disappointment. We will put it right next week."

That next fixture is another cup tie - this time in the Vitality Women's FA Cup, at home to Harrogate Town Ladies.
