Newcastle United Women beat Chorley Women 3-0 in a competitive Vitality Women's FA Cup third round fixture at the Community Ground in Burscough on Sunday.

The Lady Magpies put the game beyond doubt before half time, scoring all three of their goals in a ten-minute flurry of action that saw Georgia Gibson score two and Kacie Elson one.

While the hosts threatened the Newcastle defence at times, Becky Langley's side stood firm to earn a place in Monday's fourth round draw.

Langley's side looked the most likely to score in the opening exchanges, with Elson and Katie Barker having huge chances to open the scoring but failing to fire beyond the Chorley goalkeeper.

Despite the Lady Magpies' bright start, the hosts threatened to take the lead on 22 minutes, but a goalbound free-kick from the left was comfortably held by Grace Donnelly.

Newcastle continued to threaten as the half went on, and on 31 minutes Gibson broke the deadlock, the number ten firing home after Chorley failed to clear Rachel Lee's dangerous cross.

Just a minute later, Barker almost added a second when she connected with a Lauren Robson cross, only for it to rebound off a post.

But moments after Barker's chance, Elson extended the Lady Magpies' lead to two, looping a cross-cum-shot over the Chorley goalkeeper and into the top left corner.

As half time approached, Gibson added her second, and Newcastle Women's third of the match, when she skilfully turned her defender before hammering an unstoppable shot into the top corner via the post.

Langley's side started the second half as they ended the first, and Barker almost had a fourth goal in the 51st minute when she took on three defenders but lifted her effort over the bar from six yards out.

Newcastle maintained their relentless pressure, with Robson and Elson both breaking down their wings and producing dangerous crosses which were cleared by the Chorley defence.

The hosts pushed back themselves with several crosses, but Ellen Packham, Olivia Watt and Donnelly stood firm.

On the 70-minute mark, play had to be halted temporarily due to worrying scenes for Donnelly, after she collided with a Chorley player and was left with a head injury - but the ever-present goalkeeper was able to continue after treatment.

The final stages of the match saw the hosts continue to worry the Newcastle Women defence, with a few dangerous crosses that flashed across the box.

But, despite Chorley's efforts late on, Langley's side remained resolute and saw out an incredible result, seeing them into the fourth round.
