Georgia Gibson's solo goal gave Newcastle United Women their first win of the season at Druid Park on Sunday.

The summer signing from Sunderland Ladies scored her first goal for the Lady Magpies in the 37th minute and that proved to be the difference as Becky Langley's side bounced back from the disappointment of losing 3-2 to Chester le Street Town Ladies in their opening FA Women's National League Division One North match of the 2020/21 campaign.

United took the initiative from the first whistle but were restricted to a couple of half-chances for Katie Barker in the opening exchanges.

Barker was then denied by a fine save in the 31st minute - before Laura Wareham made a fine stop of her own at the other end four minutes later.

And within a matter of seconds, Newcastle were in front as Gibson exchanged passes with Jess Foster before driving into the box and finishing expertly.

In the second half, Wareham made another important save while Anna Soulsby was denied by the visiting goalkeeper, and player of the match Beth Guy headed wide from a Sharna Wilkinson corner late on.

But United had already done enough, and will go into next Sunday's game at Leeds United Ladies full of confidence after this important victory.
