Having scored 19 goals in their previous two matches, Newcastle United Women were unable to get the one goal that would have given them all three points at Brighouse Town Women on Sunday.

But a fourth successive clean sheet for Laura Wareham and her defence gave the Lady Magpies a share of the spoils at the Yorkshire Pay Stadium.

United had strong claims for a penalty waved away late on, but in a tight game where chances were at a premium, both teams will have been satisfied with a point.

Manager Becky Langley said: "(It was) a hard-fought point on the road; a heavy pitch and the girls worked tirelessly to protect that clean sheet.

"We are the only team not to concede to Brighouse this season. Chester le Street, (Durham) Cestria, (Liverpool) Feds haven't managed that yet.

"I'm proud of our work ethic, and tactical understanding like that hasn't happened overnight. That's down to the players' hard work to digest the information we have given them."

Langley will also have been pleased to see defender Ellen Packham make her league return following the anterior cruciate ligament injury she suffered last season. Packham had made her first appearance in eight months as a substitute in the 8-0 Northumberland FA Women's County Cup victory over Blyth Town Ladies earlier in the month, and played for half an hour here.

United are back in Vitality Women's FA Cup action next weekend. They will entertain Sunderland West End Ladies on Sunday. Kick-off at Druid Park is at 2pm GMT.
