Alnwick Town Ladies 2 Newcastle United Women 6

Newcastle United Women cruised into the final of the Bluefin Sport County Cup with a 6-2 win over Alnwick Town Ladies on Sunday.

The Lady Magpies had already scored six in their quarter-final victory over Blakelaw SFC Ladies back in November, and despite going in level at the break here, an emphatic second-half showing means they will face either Blyth Town Ladies or Wallsend BC Ladies in the final in May.

Imogen Longcake opened the scoring with her third of the season after seven minutes, finishing cooly after a neat give-and-go with the excellent Anna Soulsby, but the home side equalised three minutes later.

Leading goalscorer Beth Gardener restored the Magpies' advantage in the 32nd minute with an accurate free kick, but Alnwick levelled again three minutes before the break.

After the interval, though, United's quality told with Brianna Westrup nudging them ahead once more, then Abbie Gilchrist fired home a fourth.

Rebecca Olley - making her return from a hand injury - made it five before Jess Foster got in on the act in the 85th minute.

Manager Becky Langley said: "We're really excited to be through to the County Cup final. After a great performance on Tuesday night against Durham (Cestria), we didn't quite get the points to take us into fifth place in the league but today we came back with loads of confidence and it was great to get the win.

"It was a difficult test for us but the girls did enough, worked really hard, and we're really excited to be through to the final now."

Newcastle United Women: Dominyka Podziute, Megan McKenzie, Brianna Westrup, Maisie Cole, Emily Tait, Rhiannon Gray (Jane Harland 68), Kacie Elson, Imogen Longcake (Rebecca Olley 46), Abbie Gilchrist (Beth Guy 75), Beth Gardener (Courtney Lock 46), Anna Soulsby (Jess Foster 46)
