Southampton, like Newcastle, are looking for their first league win of the season when they travel to St. James' Park on Saturday - but the Saints have been boosted by an emphatic Carabao Cup victory in midweek, as well as a useful draw against Manchester United in their last home match.
Ralph Hasenhüttl's side were 8-0 winners at Newport on Wednesday - the same night as the Magpies were knocked out of the competition by Burnley on penalties.
That followed league defeats to West Ham and Aston Villa, but Steve Bruce's side have performed well in periods of each game and defender Federico Fernández told NUFC TV that he is confident that United will enjoy an upturn in fortunes sooner rather than later.
Isaac Hayden could return for Newcastle after suffering a knee injury at Villa Park last weekend, while Paul Dummett is back in contention. Former Magpies youngster Adam Armstrong is set to face his old club having joined Southampton from Blackburn this summer.
