Schär: "We have to believe in ourselves"

Fabian Schär returned from Covid-19 to make his first appearance in over a month against Manchester City on Boxing Day, and the Swiss defender wants Newcastle to make the most of Liverpool's defensive injuries on Wednesday night (kick-off 8pm GMT).

The Reds are top of the Premier League table as they look to retain the title they won last term, but Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are long-term absentees while Joel Matip suffered a groin problem against West Brom last time out.

And Schär told NUFC TV: "We have to look at our team and our performance and, for sure, we will go out there and try to win this game.

"Obviously, they are a threat up front and they are a decent team, of course, but they are also vulnerable at the back.

"We have to try to be defensively very solid and not to allow them to get many chances and on the other side we have to believe in ourselves, in our strength and take our chances."
