Longstaff - we can take heart from cup clash with Arsenal
Newcastle United visit the Emirates Stadium on Monday night for the second time in nine days - and although the Magpies were knocked out of the FA Cup by the Gunners last time out, Matty Longstaff believes that Steve Bruce's side can take a lot from their performance in that match.
The score after 90 minutes was 0-0 - Arsenal won 2-0 in extra time - but Newcastle arguably had the better chances and Longstaff has called for a similar showing in the Premier League as United look to make up for their disappointing defeat to Sheffield United on Tuesday night.
"We've got to have the right mentality and attitude for Monday," Longstaff told NUFC TV. "We've got to show a bit of resilience and show that (the Sheffield United defeat) wasn't good enough, but we can bounce back and beat one of the bigger teams.
"We probably could have won twice in the last few moments against them in the cup so I think it shows that we can go there and give them a game, and hopefully have a chance of beating them.
"Fingers crossed we go there and we can do a similar thing to them and nick a result, which we need."
Longstaff is hoping to earn a recall to the starting XI against the Gunners and he added: "It's down now as a squad, as a fanbase, as a coaching staff - we're all not happy and we know that we've set our standards a lot higher than we showed (against Sheffield United).
"So we have to have the right attitude and mentality and put in a performance we can we proud of. Hopefully with the right performance will come the right result."
