74'

Another attempted Southampton attack fails to come to anything, and Newcastle quickly break away through Gayle. The substitute holds up the ball before eventually trying to tee up Atsu inside the box, where the Ghanaian is beaten to the ball by Yoshida.

72'

Boufal picks up the ball midway inside the Newcastle half of the pitch and quickly tees up Long. The striker cuts onto his right foot and then swings a cross into the heart of the visitors' box, where Lejeune rises high and easily clears the danger.

70'

Newcastle win themselves a free-kick in a promising position over on the right wing, and it's curled into a dangerous area by Ritchie. The ball is only cleared as far as Lejeune by the Southampton defence, but the Frenchman ends up firing his first-time shot high and wide of the goal.

Bertrand and Long link up well on the edge of the Newcastle box, setting up the Irishman to knock the ball back to Lemina. The midfielder quickly shoots, but there are too many defenders camped in front of him and he's unable to test Elliot.

Gabbiadini is presented with another opportunity to get a shot away after more good play from Southampton, but he ends up straying offside and the linesman's flag is raised as soon as he gets a shot away from the edge of the box.

59'

Gabbiadini receives the ball at his feet just inside the Newcastle penalty area and quickly tries to spin and shoot. He goes down to the ground after battling with Lejeuene and half-heartedly appeals for a penalty, but the referee awards a free-kick to Newcastle for shirt pulling from the Italian.

Big call by the referee! Yedlin, who has already been yellow carded, flies into Redmond and catches the winger with a mistimed sliding challenge. The defender panics as it looks as if he's going to be given his marching orders, but the referee instead just decides to give him one final warning. The home fans aren't at all happy with that decision!

53'

Redmond twists and turns over on the left wing before trying to set up a team-mate inside the Newcastle penalty area, but his pass is slightly overhit and Elliot is comfortably able to deal with it.

Joselu hits the crossbar! Perez gets the better of Van Dijk out wide before cutting inside and firing a cross towards the near post. Joselu sticks out a foot and makes contact with the ball, and his glancing effort ends up hitting the woodwork after getting the better of Forster.

We're underway once again!

The two teams are making their way back out on to the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.

Southampton have dominated possession so far but they've struggled to break down a compact and well-organised Newcastle back line. The visitors have dug in well and frustrated their opponents, who have strung together some decent passes in the final third of the pitch but have found it difficult to test Elliot with any clear-cut chances.

HALF-TIME: SOUTHAMPTON 0-1 NEWCASTLE UNITED

46'

Newcastle are presented with one final opportunity to launch the ball into the hosts' box after winning a free-kick on the halfway line, but Shelvey's lofted pass forward is easily dealt with by Lemina, bringing an end to what has been another disappointing first half for Southampton.

45'

The fourth official has indicated that there will be just one minute of added time.

44'

A clever throw-in from Manquillo loops into the Southampton box and manages to pick out Joselu in a pocket of space. The striker, who has barely seen any of the ball so far this afternoon, spins and shoots, but he can't make decent contact with the ball and sends his volleyed strike high into the air and down to Forster.

43'

Newcastle have been on the back foot since going ahead, but they're finally able to push forward once again. Ritchie pulls off an acrobatic overhead kick that sends the ball looping over to the far post, where Atsu gets a shot away but fires his first-time volley well wide of the goal.

42'

Tadic and Long link up well on the edge of the Newcastle penalty area, setting up the Irishman to shoot. His effort is blocked by Lascelles but he manages to nod the ball down towards Gabbiadini, who sticks out a foot in front of goal but can't quite latch onto it ahead of Elliot.

41'

Elliot darts out quickly once again as he tries to deal with a dangerous, looping corner, but this time he's able to get a fist on the ball and can punch it away from the on-rushing Van Dijk.

41'

Elliot darts out quickly once again as he tries to deal with a dangerous, looping corner, but this time he's able to get a fist on the ball and can punch it away from the on-rushing Van Dijk.

40'

Ryan Bertrand darts down the left flank on a great run before firing a low cross into the heart of the visitors' box, where it finds Tadic in a decent position. The Serbian quickly shoots, but Lejeune sticks out a foot to make sure it deflects behind for a corner.

39'

Lascelles has his arms all over Long, who is dragged to the ground from behind and wins a free-kick for Southampton in a promising position 30 yards away from the Newcastle goal. Bertrand's cross into the box is a good one and finds Van Dijk, who does well to get a head on the ball but can't do anything with it.

37'

A poor attempted clearance from Elliot can only find Tadic, and the Serbian quickly tees up Long on the edge of the box. The striker breaks into the penalty area and shoots, but Hayden is there to block his low effort with a well-timed interception.

35'

Good play by Tadic and Cedric sets up the Portuguese to cross, but Jonjo Shelvey is there to win back possession for the visitors. He then tries to kick-start a counter-attack, but Newcastle don't break away quickly enough and it fails to result in anything.

33'

Tadic wins Southampton a throw-in deep down the right flank that's quickly sent to Redmond, but the winger is closed down by a group of blue shirts and Newcastle are able to hold on once again.

31'

The home side are continuing to enjoy the majority of possession as they keep putting pressure on the Newcastle back line, but this time a poor pass from Yoshida fails to find a team-mate inside the final third of the pitch and rolls out for a throw-in.

29'

Southampton are enjoying a decent spell of possession as they try to find a way back into the game. This time it's Lemina who manages to get a shot away, but his 25-yard volleyed effort is mishit and sails comfortably wide of the near post.

28'

Almost another great chance for Gabbiadini! Southampton quickly win the ball back and work it over to Yoshida over on the left flank. The defender immediately whips a wonderful cross into the penalty area and towards Gabbiadini, who tries his hardest to latch onto the ball in front of goal but can't quite do so.

27'

A clumsy challenge on the break results in a free-kick for Southampton in a dangerous position midway inside the visitors' half of the pitch. Redmond tries to play a deft pass into the penalty area, but it's underhit and fails to pick out Long inside the box.

26'

Cedric knocks a long pass into the right-hand side of the Newcastle box and towards Tadic, who tries to get a cross away from the byline but isn't quite able to stop the ball from rolling behind for a goal-kick.

24'

Big call by the referee! For a moment it looks as if Perez has got the better of Yoshida out wide after knocking the defender off the ball, but just as he's about to penetrate the penalty area and go one-on-one with Forster, the referee awards a free-kick to Southampton.

22'

Van Dijk almost equalises! The set-piece is curled into the heart of the box and manages to pick out Van Dijk, who latches onto the ball after Rob Elliot completely misses it but can't hit the target with his glancing header.

21'

Almost a great chance for Manolo Gabbiadini! A dangerous lofted pass is fired towards the near post and manages to pick out Gabbiadini, who desperately tries to get a shot away but is closed down by Florian Lejeune at the vital moment, resulting in a corner for Southampton.

20'

Goal Isaac Hayden

19'

Newcastle push forward once again and win themselves another corner after a low cross from Ritchie is deflected behind by Shane Long. Ritchie's cross into the box is a better one and manages to find Jamal Lascelles, but the defender can only send his tame headed effort straight into the hands of Forster.

18'

Cedric is put under pressure by Atsu and has to head the ball behind for a Newcastle corner. Matt Ritchie steps up and curls a cross into the middle of the penalty area, where Van Dijk rises high and easily clears the danger.

17'

Fraser Forster is almost caught out! The ball is played back to the Southampton goalkeeper, who takes an age to clear the danger. Perez closes him down and gives the home side a real scare, but, luckily for the Englishman, the ball deflects behind for a goal-kick.

16'

What a chance for Tadic! Redmond twists and turns over on the left flank before curling a lovely cross over to the far post. It picks out Tadic in a pocket of space, but the Serbian can't keep his header down and sends it looping onto the top of the net.

14'

Tadic does well to spin round Shelvey midway inside the Newcastle half of the pitch before bombing towards the penalty area. He then manages to get a shot away, but there's slightly too much power behind it and it ends up sailing high over the top of the crossbar.

12'

Hayden picks up the ball on the halfway line and quickly tries to pick out Atsu deep down the left wing, but the midfielder's lofted pass is slightly overhit and fails to find the Ghanaian before bouncing behind for a goal-kick.

10'

Oriol Romeu clatters into Shelvey and brings the Newcastle midfielder crashing to the ground, resulting in a free-kick for Newcastle on the halfway line. It's thumped forward but fails to result in a chance on goal, as Southampton are easily able to deal with the danger.

9'

Atsu goes close! Ayoze Perez is presented with a great chance to fire a low cross into the Southampton box, but it's underhit and deflected behind by Virgil van Dijk for a corner. The set-piece is only half cleared by Mario Lemina and flies out to Atsu, who quickly unleashes a low strike that flies just wide of the near post and into the side-netting.

7'

Dusan Tadic makes a clever run into the right-hand side of the Newcastle penalty area as he tries to latch onto a lofted pass forward from Cedric, but Isaac Hayden is there to get the better of the Serbian before he's able to do so.

5'

Christian Atsu picks up the ball deep down the left flank and is quickly put under pressure by Cedric Soares. He spins and tries to tee up Manquillo, but his pass is slightly mishit and rolls out for a throw-in before it can find the Spaniard.

3'

A long ball forward from Maya Yoshida manages to pick out Nathan Redmond in a pocket of space over on the left flank. The winger cuts inside quickly and then curls a cross over to the far post, where Javi Manquillo is just about able to head the ball away from danger at the vital moment.

We're off! Southampton get us underway, attacking from left to right.

The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.

Meanwhile, Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has made two alterations to the team that featured in their last outing, with Ciaran Clark and Mikel Merino making way for Florian Lejeune and Isaac Hayden, respectively.

Mauricio Pellegrino has decided to make just one change to the Southampton side that started the defeat away to Stoke City two weeks ago, with Manolo Gabbiadini coming into the starting line-up to replace Steven Davis.

Newcastle United substitutes: Darlow, Gamez, Clark, Diame, Merino, Murphy, Gayle.

Newcastle United XI (4-2-3-1): Elliot; Yedlin, Lascelles, Lejeune, Manquillo; Shelvey, Ritchie; Hayden, Perez, Atsu; Joselu.

Southampton substitutes: McCarthy, McQueen, Hoedt, Davis, Ward-Prowse, Boufal, Austin.

Southampton XI (4-2-3-1): Forster; Cedric, Van Dijk, Yoshida, Bertrand; Romeu, Lemina; Tadic, Long, Redmond, Gabbiadini.

There’s just under 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this afternoon…

Newcastle were beaten in two of their three away games this campaign, but all were closely fought affairs and they’ll be feeling quietly confident about their chances of coming away with all three points today. They’ve struggled against Southampton in recent years, however, with the Saints winning four of the last five meetings between the two sides.

Things are looking much more positive for Newcastle, who will move equal on points with Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea if they’re victorious this afternoon. They did well to pick up a hard-earned draw at home to Liverpool before the international break and have enjoyed three wins and a draw from their last five Premier League games, the fourth-best record over that period.

Southampton’s main problem has been in the final third of the pitch, where they’ve desperately struggled to find the back of the net. Their record of failing to find the back of the net in eight of their last nine home league games is an incredibly worrying one, and it doesn’t bode well for this afternoon’s clash against a well-organised and defensively compact Newcastle team.

While it may not have been an absolutely disastrous start to the season for Southampton, it certainly hasn’t been a particularly good one. They failed to impress under Claude Puel and have continued to struggle under new boss Mauricio Pellegrino, who already finds himself under pressure after managing to pick up just eight points from the opening seven games.

Good afternoon and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Premier League game between Southampton and Newcastle United at St. Mary’s.
