Nice play by City looks as if it's going to result in a chance for Diaz to burst down the left flank and into a decent position, but the youngster ends up losing his footing at the vital moment and falls to the ground as he tries to dart away from his marker.

Late chance for Gayle! Shelvey does well to carve out a pocket of space for himself over on the left-hand side of the City box before sending a great cross into the heart of the penalty area. Gayle rises high and reaches the ball, but he can't quite make good enough contact with it and sends his effort comfortably wide of the goal.

The fourth official has indicated that there will be three minutes of added time.

Murphy has arguably been Newcastle's best attacking player tonight, and once again he's able to burst forward on a good counter-attacking run. He breaks into the box and sets up Shelvey, who shoots from the right-hand side of the penalty area and forces Ederson into making a smart save.

De Bruyne almost makes it 3-1! Sterling and Aguero link up nicely just outside of the Newcastle penalty area before the Argentine moves the ball over to De Bruyne. The midfielder quickly shoots, and his curling effort ends up bouncing just a yard or so wide of the far post.

Sane is dispossessed deep inside the Newcastle half of the pitch and the visitors counter-attack once again. Murphy does well to reach the edge of the penalty area after getting the better of Nicolas Otamendi, but there's nobody in a black and white shirt around him and he's eventually dispossessed before he can tee up a team-mate.

Poor from Perez! De Bruyne clumsily loses the ball deep inside the Newcastle half of the pitch, and the visitors quickly counter-attack. They initially do really well to burst forward through Murphy, but Perez's attempted pass into the path of Yedlin is woefully hit and rolls straight through to Ederson.

Two excellent chances for Newcastle! Diame is somehow able to charge into the hosts' penalty area as he easily gets the better of Stones. He gets a shot away that's horribly fumbled by Ederson, allowing Perez to unleash a strike of his own. The Brazilian is just about able to save that one as well but, once again, not entirely convincingly.

Sterling hits the post! Sane bursts into the left-hand side of the Newcastle box before cutting a lovely pass back to Sterling. The England international quickly shoots, but his low effort is tipped onto the woodwork by a wonderful save from Darlow.

Aguero goes close to wrapping up his hat-trick! A deep corner from De Bruyne flies out to the edge of the Newcastle penalty area and manages to pick out Aguero. The striker quickly cuts away from his marker before shooting, and his curling effort misses the far post by the narrowest of margins.

PENALTY! Sterling and Silva play a quick one-two between themselves before the Englishman darts into the penalty area. He takes on Manquillo and is hauled to the ground by the defender, leaving the referee with no opportunity but to point to the spot.

Vital interception by Hayden! A lovely chipped pass from Fernandinho sails over the top of the Newcastle penalty area and into the path of Walker. The full-back controls the ball well and knocks it over to Aguero, who looks set to convert from close range but loses out to Hayden just as he's about to pull the trigger.

An attempted Newcastle attacking move fails to come to anything once again, and City quickly hit them on a counter-attack. Sterling charges down the right flank before cutting a pass back towards Sane, but it's underhit and fails to find the German. He really should have done better there!

Almost a chance for Sane to make it 2-0! De Bruyne sends a lovely curling cross into the heart of the Newcastle box that looks set to pick out Sane. He darts towards the ball, but he's closed down well by Manquillo and can't quite get the better of the Spaniard.

Fernandinho is eventually able to get back to his feet and the game gets underway once again. City quickly push forward through Zinchenko, who tees up Sane to send a cross into the box that's met by Jamal Lascelles before it can reach Silva in front of goal.

There's a slight break in play after a slight coming together between Fernandinho and Joselu, although both players should be able to continue. The Brazilian gave away a free-kick after catching Joselu in the side of the face, and he also received a knock in the ribs that has left him in a heap on the floor.

The hosts win themselves a corner over on left wing, and it's sent short before being worked over to Sane on the opposite flank. The German is in acres of space and pokes a pass into the box, where it's almost latched onto by Sterling but is slightly overhit.

City immediately go on the front foot once again as they look to double their lead. The ball pinballs around the edge of the Newcastle penalty area after good play by Sterling, but nobody in a sky blue shirt can quite get a shot away and the visitors hold on.

Newcastle are presented with one final chance to push forward before the half-time break, and it's one that sees them embark on a decent attacking move. They work the ball around nicely before Murphy charges into the left-hand side of the box, but he can't quite pick out a team-mate with his low cross and City hold on.

Inches wide by De Bruyne! Aguero and De Bruyne link up brilliantly once again, and this time it's the Argentine who sets up the midfielder to shoot. He manages to do so from the edge of the penalty area, but Darlow dives down low to tip the deflected effort just round the post.

Aguero makes a good run into the visitors' box and is picked out by a chipped pass from Silva, but Dummett rises high and manages to nod the ball behind for a corner before the striker can do anything with it. De Bruyne's cross in fails to pick out a team-mate, however, and it's easily cleared by the first man.

Silva somehow manages to dance his way into the left-hand side of the Newcastle penalty area and towards the byline. He shrugs off two defenders before trying to pick out Aguero, but his low cross can't quite find the Argentine and is thumped away from danger at the vital moment.

Silva, who has seen plenty of the ball so far, causes problems over on the left channel once again before sending a deflected cross behind for a corner. It's whipped in by the Spaniard and flies towards the near post, where it fails to find a team-mate and is easily cleared by Joselu.

Chance for Sterling! The winger has struggled to carve out too many opportunities on goal, but he's able to sting the palms of Darlow once again after good play by De Bruyne and Aguero. Sterling's strike is sent straight into the hands of the goalkeeper,  however, and it's easily stopped.

The midfielder initially can't quite control the ball but eventually manages to spin and poke a cross into the heart of the penalty area, where Clark is able to thump the ball away from danger before it can find Aguero.

De Bruyne picks up the ball on the halfway line and immediately bursts forward on a blisteringly quick run. He heads through the middle of the pitch and manages to reach the box, where he goes down under a tackle from Shelvey. The Belgian immediately appeals for a free-kick, but the referee isn't at all interested and waves play on.

Space opens up for Sane, who immediately bursts into the left-hand side of the visitors' penalty area. He can't quite get a cross away but the ball runs back to De Bruyne, who tries to carve out a pocket of space for himself but accidentally ends up running the ball out of play.

Sane and De Bruyne link up nicely over on the left-hand side of the Newcastle box before a low cross is fired into the middle of the penalty area by the Belgian. It's just about knocked away from Sergio Aguero but finds Walker, who quickly sets up Fernandinho to shoot on the edge of the box. The Brazilian looks set to pull the trigger, but he's brilliantly dispossessed before he's able to do so.

Sterling scores, but it won't count! After losing the ball cheaply, Newcastle are hit by a blisteringly quick counter-attack. Silva sprints down the left channel and sends a delightful pass over to the far post, where Sterling fires a first-time strike past Karl Darlow and into the back of the net. His celebrations are short-lived, however, as the linesman's flag is correctly raised.

De Bruyne is dispossessed in the middle of the pitch, presenting Newcastle with a rare opportunity to counter-attack. Murphy does well to dart through the middle of the pitch before setting up Joselu, who tries to pick out Shelvey with a chipped cross but sends it straight to Fernandinho.

Vital interception by Javi Manquillo! The Spaniard initially falls asleep and allows a lofted pass forward from Zinchenko to fly into the penalty area and towards Leroy Sane. The German brings the ball down well and looks set to shoot, but he can't quite get it out of his feet quickly enough and is eventually dispossessed by Manquillo.

More good play by Zinchenko, who has camped himself firmly inside the Newcastle half of the pitch so far, sees the youngster whip a dangerous cross over to the far post, where Paul Dummett is forced into nodding the ball behind for a corner before it can reach a sky blue shirt.

Some thought that Newcastle might try and press City after it proved to be such a good tactic for Liverpool last weekend, but they're sat deep inside their own half of the pitch as they allow the hosts to continue dominating possession. They're playing with a back five when out of possession, with Isaac Hayden dropping back into defence to help fill the penalty area with bodies.

Jacob Murphy has his pocket picked out wide, allowing Oleksandr Zinchenko to sprint down the left wing before winning the home side a corner. It's taken quickly and worked over to Kyle Walker, who shoots from 30 yards out and sends his audacious effort well wide of its intended target.

City knock the ball from one side to the other as they continue to comfortably dominate possession. Fernandinho cuts inside from the left flank and manages to pick out Raheem Sterling with a cross-field pass, but the winger is slightly offside and the linesman's flag is raised before he can do anything with the ball.

Huge opportunity for John Stones! City keep piling bodies into the Newcastle half of the pitch as they continue trying to find an early opener. Silva breaks into the box once again and this time manages to pick out Stones, who rushes onto the ball but can only poke it narrowly wide of the near post.

Kevin De Bruyne is caught from behind by Mohamed Diame, and City are presented with a free-kick of their own. It's sent short and worked over to David Silva, who rushes into the left-hand side of the Newcastle penalty area but is closed down and can't quite get a shot away.

Early chance for Newcastle! The visitors win themselves a free-kick midway inside the City half of the pitch, and it's quickly sent down the left wing by Jonjo Shelvey. His pass finds Christian Atsu and sets up the Ghanaian to chip a cross into the box, where it bounces around dangerously before falling to Ciaran Clark. The defender quickly shoots, but his downward volley is easily collected by Ederson.
