Hull City V Newcastle United

Top-flight outfit Hull played the entirety of extra-time a man light, as Dieumerci Mbokani was given his marching orders with 89 minutes on the clock following an altercation with Jamaal Lascelles.

His dismissal lifted the Magpies, who soon got their noses in front courtesy of Mohamed Diame – the Senegalese midfielder coming back to haunt the club he left this summer.

However, barely a minute later, the scores were level again, as Robert Snodgrass forced the ball home after Matz Sels’ parry.

After a breathless end to extra-time, Jonjo Shelvey, Dwight Gayle and Yoan Gouffran all missed from the spot for Newcastle, while the Tigers found the net three times out of three.

United’s first sight of goal came eight minutes in. After pouncing on a loose ball inside his own half, Gouffran was afforded the room to advance into the hosts’ penalty area, but could only scuff wide with a tame effort.

The Magpies then threatened twice in quick succession. Just before the quarter-of-an-hour mark, Shelvey picked out the run of Gayle with a superb lofted pass, and the frontman drew a smart save from Hull ‘keeper Eldin Jakupovic.

Just seconds later, the hosts’ backline stood off familiar foe Diame, who drilled just wide of the far post with a powerful strike.

Midway through the half, Hull threatened for the first time. Ciaran Clark slid in superbly to dispossess forward Adamo Diomande, but the loose ball trickled out invitingly for Snodgrass, who lashed wide with his favoured left foot.

Within the blink of an eye, Newcastle came inches to an opener. Vurnon Anita got the better of Tigers left-back Andy Robertson, and the Dutchman’s looping cross was powered just high of the target by Diame.

The visitors continued to look the brighter, and – following a short corner routine – Matt Ritchie curled over the crossbar from 20 yards.

Isaac Hayden was next to take aim, brilliantly winning the ball back from David Meyler midway inside the Hull half, before firing narrowly wide from just outside the area.

After the break, the Magpies picked up where they left off. Only a vital Harry Maguire block prevented Gayle from converting Ritchie’s low cross, before Gouffran blazed high and wide with options either side.

Hull were then afforded some respite following Hayden’s trip on Diomande. Snodgrass stepped up to take the resultant free-kick 20 yards out, but failed to test Sels.

64 minutes in, the Tigers were awarded another set-piece in an almost identical position, Hayden going into the book as a result of a challenge on Robertson. Again Snodgrass took aim, but the Scot couldn’t keep his effort on target.

Mike Phelan’s side continued to improve as the second-half wore on, and Jake Livermore called Sels into action with a headed attempt from Snodgrass’ cross.

At the other end, Newcastle were restricted to slim pickings in the following exchanges. Shelvey twice shot wide from distance, the first attempt on the back of an adventurous run.

In the final minute of normal time, the Magpies’ cause was given a sizeable boost. Lascelles and Mbokani clashed on the touchline, and the Congolose forward was dismissed after aiming a headbutt at the United skipper.

As the additional 30 minutes began, Clark almost gave the visitors an early lead, forcing Jakupovic into a parry after Anita’s cross was just missed by Gayle.

But, just minutes later, the Swiss ‘keeper was picking the ball out of his net.

Following another short corner, Anita’s cross was flicked on by Gayle, and Diame was on hand to force the ball home at the back post.

The hosts, however, were not about to give up the ghost just yet.

They immediately made inroads down the left flank, and substitute Markus Henriksen forced Sels into a low stop from 20 yards. The Belgian was unable to keep hold of the ball, however, and Snodgrass followed up to restore parity from close-range.

Gayle almost restored United’s advantage with 107 minutes on the clock, the frontman’s thumping header well kept out by Jakupovic following a fine Christian Atsu cross.

Atsu teed up Gayle for a second time just moments later, but the Magpies’ leading scorer failed to keep his effort down when well-placed inside the hosts’ area.

At the opposite end of the pitch, Norwegian attacker Henriksen lashed high of the target for Hull after Snodgrass’ set-piece was only half-cleared.

Two minutes from time, Newcastle survived an almighty scare. Diomande got the better of Lascelles just inside the United half, and picked out Snodgrass’ run with a through-pass. The winger looked to work the ball back onto his left, only to lose his footing at the vital moment.

And so, spot-kicks began.

Newcastle immediately found themselves on the back foot, as Jakupovic saved from Shelvey before Gayle rattled the woodwork.

Snodgrass, Michael Dawson and Tom Huddlestone all converted for Hull, and, despite Atsu pulling one back, the Magpies bowed out after Gouffran saw his tame effort kept out.
