Son of former Liverpool legend Terry, Greg McDermott is, like his dad, a hard-working box-to-box central midfielder.

He started this season with two goals in the opening three Barclays Premier Reserve League fixtures, netting against Norwich and Swansea, and was named in the squad for the first-team at Nottingham Forest in the Carling Cup.

Last season, he had been part of the matchday party for United's Barclays Premier League away game at Blackpool and home win over Birmingham, as well as the Carling Cup victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The former Northumberland Schools player has been with Newcastle - where his father was once Assistant Manager under Kevin Keegan - since 1999.

McDermott has occasionally also played at centre-half to good effect.

Like close friend and team-mate Paul Dummett, he is a keen snorkeler and also enjoys golf.
