The London-born striker was originally with Southampton but joined the United set up in July 2008. Scored on his Academy debut at Leicester on 23rd August and sat on the first team bench at Coventry in a League Cup tie three days later without getting on.
Made his Reserve team bow in opening second-string game of 2008/09 campaign - against Sunderland at St. James' Park on 1st September 2008. Won the 'Wor Jackie' award from Sport Newcastle in March 2009. Made his England Under 19 debut on 25 March 2009 against Czech Republic at Walsall (0-0).
Signed new three-and-a-half year contract in April 2009. Ranger marked his first international start on 27th May with a goal for England's under-19 side against Bosnia at Doncaster (2-0) in the first of a trio of European Championship Elite Qualifying Round ties and followed that up with two more against Slovakia 48 hours later and another against Scotland on 1st June. Scored 22 goals in 43 appearances for the Reserves/Academy in 2008/09.
Came on as a late substitute to make his league debut at the Hawthorns on 8th August 2009. Scored his first senior goal in the 2-0 win at Coventry on 9th December 2009.
However he failed to make a first-team appearance for United in 2011/12 after falling out of favour with Alan Pardew and was loaned out to Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday.
