Cardiff v Newcastle: Key Moments

By Dan King - Newcastle United Digital Editor

Cardiff City 1 (Odemwingie 58)
Newcastle United 2 (Remy 30, 38)

SECOND HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons90+4mins: Having looked so comfortable at half-time, it ended up being a nervy second half but Newcastle have claimed their second away win of the campaign. Loic Remy's double set the Magpies on their way and despite Peter Odemwingie's strike just before the hour, Alan Pardew's side did enough. A wonderful result in Wales - click here for the match report.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons90mins: The first yellow card of the day goes to Aron Gunnarsson for a tug on Ben Arfa. There will be four long minutes of added time.

SUB-MDC-icons86mins: Hatem Ben Arfa is on in place of the excellent Cabaye. The Newcastle fans have been chanting his name for several minutes and now they have their wish.

85mins: Appeals for a Newcastle penalty as Andrew Taylor, Cardiff's Hartlepool-born left-back, appears to handle a bouncing ball in from the left but referee Kevin Friend fails to spot it. The official has done well today but that surely should have been a spot-kick for United.

83mins: Action at both ends as first Debuchy picks out Cabaye with a superb pass and the latter almost bursts through but is thwarted by some dogged defending from Kevin Theophile-Catherine. The hosts launch a counter and Krul does well to prevent Mutch from dinking the ball over him.

SUB-MDC-icons81mins: In Cardiff's final change, Nicky Maynard replaces Odemwingie.

80mins: Good pressure from the Magpies almost results in a third. Gouffran sends over a cross from the right and Gutierrez shows good strength - and enjoys a bit of luck - for the ball to bounce off him into the path of Cisse, who tries to force home only for Marshall to deny him with his latest save of the afternoon.

78mins: Today's attendance is 27,538 with more than 1,000 of them in the away section.

76mins: Mutch has made a difference since coming on at the break and after a good run he slides a lovely ball into the path of Bellamy but Krul is out quickly and bravely to block at the Welshman's feet.

73mins: Cabaye forces a corner which he takes himself and after Williamson gets the faintest of touches to his far post delivery, Debuchy nods the ball back across goal and Gutierrez sends a looping header just over the bar.

SUB-MDC-icons71mins: Jonas Gutierrez is on for two-goal Loic Remy as United look to defend their lead. The Argentine is back from injury and his work ethic and commitment could be invaluable.

67mins: Cabaye shoots from just inside the area but his effort is blocked by Steven Caulker, the Cardiff captain. Another United goal would surely be enough but unless they get one, it's going to become an increasingly nervous last 25 minutes or so.

SUB-MDC-icons66mins: Craig Bellamy is on for Fraizer Campbell and United fans know all about Cardiff's number 39.

64mins: Newcastle break at pace after clearing a corner kick and Cabaye feeds Remy, who in turn plays in Sissoko. The Frenchman sprints into the box but his low shot is blocked by the legs of Marshall and that was a real chance to ease some of the pressure that is starting to build in this match.

60mins: The home fans had been stunned into silence in the first half but now they're right behind their boys and are creating quite an atmosphere. Odemwingie finds Campbell in the box and he turns and shoots, but Krul is relieved to see his effort flash wide of the far post.

GOAL-MDC-icons58mins - CARDIFF CITY GOAL (1-2): The hosts pull one back just after another sublime United move and suddenly they're right back in it. Aron Gunnarsson's pass is poked into the path of Peter Odemwingie by Mutch and the former West Brom striker casually leaves Krul on his backside before drilling the ball beyond Williamson on the line.

55mins: Now Whittingham stabs wide from close range after good work from Mutch on the Cardiff right and the hosts are just beginning to show signs of life in this second period.

51mins: Peter Whittingham delivers a decent corner from the left and Mutch gets up highest but heads wide.

47mins: Santon floats the ball into the box and Williamson, still up from an earlier corner, puts Ben Turner under enough pressure to force the defender to head the ball straight to Cabaye. He shoots from 20 yards and Marshall dives to his left to push the ball away.

SUB-MDC-iconsWHISTLE-MDC-icons46mins: Cardiff have made a change at the break, with Jordon Mutch replacing Kim, and it's the home side who get the second half underway.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons45+2mins: When Newcastle walked off at the break against Everton last time out, they were 3-0 down after a rotten display. Today, they lead 2-0 and have been superb. Loic Remy's brace will rightly grab headlines but all 11 players have been excellent and Alan Pardew must be absolutely delighted. Click here for the half-time report.

45mins: There will be a minimum of two minutes of stoppage time.

43mins: Cabaye looks certain to float the ball into the box from a free-kick out on the right, 35 yards from goal, but opts instead to shoot from an improbable position and sees the ball crash back off the near post with Marshall taken completely by surprise. Cheick Tiote then follows up with a shot from distance but this one goes high into the stand. United have been superb in this first half.

GOAL-MDC-icons38mins - NEWCASTLE UNITED GOAL (0-2): Remy scores again and Newcastle double their lead. Cabaye picked out Cisse with a superb run and the striker's shot was saved by Marshall, who perhaps should have held onto the ball rather than parry it. Nonetheless, Remy still had it all to do as he raced to meet it and, from just outside the box, side-footed through a defender's legs and into the smallest of gaps just inside the far post. What a finish and what a scoreline for the Magpies.

33mins: Cardiff are nearly caught out again as Newcastle, pressing high up the pitch, win the ball through Cabaye and the midfielder tries to lift the ball over Marshall. The keeper was slightly off his line but manages to clutch the ball above his head.

GOAL-MDC-icons30mins - NEWCASTLE UNITED GOAL (0-1): Loic Remy's fourth goal in four starts for Newcastle gives the Magpies the lead here in South Wales and boy, do they deserve it. The Frenchman was just inside the City half when he picked up the ball and motored forward before shimmying inside from the left, past two defenders, and firing into the bottom corner beyond Marshall's despairing drive. Fantastic play from Remy.

29mins: Coloccini slides in to nick the ball off Campbell but it breaks perfectly for Kim Bo-Kyung who bends the ball over the bar from the edge of the area.

27mins: More great football from the Magpies as they create another good chance - but Mathieu Debuchy elects to pass rather than shoot. His great run is found by Cabaye's slide-rule pass and he races in on goal but tries to cut the ball back to Remy and Cardiff are able to scramble the ball away.

18mins: So close to an opener for Newcastle. Yohan Cabaye pumps a free-kick into the area after Remy was fouled and the ball falls to Mike Williamson, who prods the ball to Remy but the Frenchman's shot is somehow pushed away by David Marshall. Then as Cardiff fail to properly clear their lines, Moussa Sissoko tries his luck on the half-volley moments later and again sees Marshall keep the ball out.

11mins: Patient build-up from United sees Loic Remy roll the ball to Cisse 20 yards from goal and the frontman makes room for a shot but sees it fly off target. That would have been some goal had it gone in, with Alan Pardew's side working the ball from back to front with a succession of short passes.

6mins: Davide Santon's excellent diagonal ball almost sets Papiss Cisse away but the striker's first touch somewhat lets him down when better control would have given him a clear shot on goal. Instead, the ball skids out for a goal kick.

4mins: After a confident start from the Magpies, they're almost undone by a lack of communication similar to the one which led to Everton's third goal on Monday. Fabricio Coloccini and Tim Krul leave a high ball to each other before Krul eventually makes a grab for it as Fraizer Campbell closes in. At full stretch, however, the goalkeeper can't hold on and he's relieved to see Campbell lose his footing as he attempts to walk the ball into the net from a narrow angle.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons1min: Traditionally Cardiff City played in blue but nowadays their home shirts are red and so it's the Magpies who run out in blue in South Wales. Their denim change kit is given an airing on an afternoon when the sky is also blue - but hopefully the Newcastle supporters won't be come full-time. United take kick-off, attacking towards the Eisteddle Croeso Stand.
