Newcastle United 1 (Marveaux 23)
CS Maritimo 1 (Fidelis 79)
SECOND HALF UPDATES
90+3mins: Full-time - there are a few boos from the home fans but Newcastle are going through to the next stage of the Europa League despite a somewhat underwhelming draw at St. James' Park. Sylvain Marveaux's goal gave them the lead but Maritimo bossed the second half and Fidelis equalised with 11 minutes to go. Hatem Ben Arfa's first-half injury also took the gloss off United's qualification but it's a case of job done, even if it wasn't done in too much style tonight.
90+2mins: Club Brugge have pulled a goal back against Bordeaux but that would change nothing - however Fidelis almost does change things here as he arrives unmarked at the far post and shins wide.
90mins: As Sami drives a shot narrowly wide, the board goes up: there will be three minutes of stoppage time.
81mins: Santon stings the palms of Salin with a low drive from range but it was dealt with by the Maritimo keeper, who hasn't had much to do in this half.
79mins - MARITIMO GOAL (1-1): The visitors' pressure has paid off - they've equalised although it's a controversial goal because there was a clear handball from Ruben Ferreira in the build-up. Nonetheless, Newcastle should have done more to stop sub Fidelis from playing a one-two and then charging through the middle; he was eventually forced slightly wide by Taylor but was still able to slot past Krul from a tight angle. However, as things stand United would still wrap up qualification tonight - they'd be on nine points with Bordeaux on ten. Club Brugge would remain on four as they're losing and Maritimo would have three points.
76mins: A third and final change for Newcastle and it's a rare run-out for Mehdi Abeid - he's on for Sammy Ameobi.
75mins: Amalfitano finds Marveaux, who feeds Santon on the left. The Italian's low cross is just behind Ba, who tries to flick the ball home but is just unable to do so due to the presence of a defender.
73mins: Krul is forced into action again as he pushes a strike from Ruben Ferreira around the post. The ball had found its way to the full-back from a deep corner from the right. After United defend the corner, David Simao is replaced by Ruben Brigido in Maritimo's second change of the night.
69mins: Marveaux's floated free-kick is headed on by Steven Taylor and Ameobi sticks out a leg to try and divert it towards goal - but just can't direct it on target.
66mins: Maritimo skipper Rafael Miranda win possession in midfield and plays in sub Fidelis, whose 20-yard effort swerves horribly off target but still it's the men from Madeira who are dominating this half.
62mins: The away side are on top at the moment and Dias comes close again, thumping a 22-yard effort into the side-netting - it was a good few inches wide of the target but Krul would have struggled to get there had it been on target.
59mins: Sami heads narrowly wide after connecting with an inviting ball from the right; he perhaps should have scored. Maritimo make a change as Adilson makes way for Fidelis in what is a like-for-like substitution.
54mins: Dias has made a bright start to this half and sends an arrowing strike towards Krul's goal, only for the Dutch keeper to push the powerful shot over the bar - it's easily the closest the Portuguese outfit have came to scoring.
52mins: Sammy Ameobi lets fly from 25 yards and his effort takes a big deflection to send it looping up towards the top corner, but keeper Salin does well to readjust and pluck the ball from the air.
50mins: On comes Amalfitano in place of Papiss Cisse - Alan Pardew will want to protect some of his key players after seeing Ben Arfa hobble off in the first half and it's a good chance for United's summer signing from Reims.
49mins: Danilo Dias sends an ambitious shot well over the bar as he tries to force his side back into the game early in this second half, while Romain Amalfitano looks like he is coming on.
46mins: The men from Madeira get the second half underway, with Newcastle now kicking towards the Gallowgate and no changes from either side. Tonight's attendance is 21,632.
FIRST HALF UPDATES
45+1mins: It's half-time and Newcastle lead through Sylvain Marveaux's neat run and finish - and as things stand they're going to progress to the next round of the Europa League. However the bad news is that Hatem Ben Arfa limped off towards the end of the half with what looks like a hamstring injury.
45mins: There will be just the one minute of stoppage time at the end of the half.
42mins: David Simao drags a shot well wide for the visitors after Joao Luiz had won possession for his side to set up the chance 22 yards from goal. Bordeaux are now 2-0 up against Club Brugge.
40mins: Demba Ba is on in place of Ben Arfa, who is unable to continue. Leading scorer Ba is not a bad replacement for tonight though.
38mins: Ben Arfa needs treatment and then limps off clutching his hamstring - let's hope that's nothing serious because Alan Pardew really wouldn't want to lose the services of the Frenchman for the next few league games. It looks like it's going to force him out of tonight anyway and United are presently down to ten men.
37mins: Cisse strikes for what he thinks is Newcastle's second goal, but it won't count as the assistant referee's flag is up. Gael Bigirimana had a shot from the edge of the box and for the second time tonight, goalkeeper Salin doesn't look too convincing as he parries it away straight to the striker. Alas, he'd moved a moment too soon and so his effort was chalked off.
34mins: Since the goal, it's all gone quiet again but that won't worry Newcastle too much - they're the side in front and as things stand they're going through to the next round.
23mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-0): And right on cue, the Magpies take the lead. Hatem Ben Arfa plays the ball out to Marveaux on the right and he scampers towards the box before poking a shot goalwards. It's hit so quickly that it takes the keeper by surprise, leaving him with no chance and as things stand, Newcastle are on course to secure qualification for the next stage of the Europa League tonight.
22mins: It's all gone rather flat here, with nothing to report at either end although Newcastle do look the superior side.
8mins: Tim Krul has to make a save as Maritimo dangerman Sami hits a low effort which is on target, but never looked likely to beat the Newcastle number one who fell to his left to gather with ease. In tonight's other Group D game, Bordeaux are 1-0 up against Club Brugge,
4mins: Sylvain Marveaux siezes on a loose pass and chips the ball into the path of Papiss Cisse, whose dinked shot is palmed away by Salin but the flag was up anyway against the Senegalese striker. It's been a bright start from the Magpies, though, who may feel they have a point to prove after two successive defeats on this ground.
3mins: Davide Santon picks the ball up on the left, runs at the defence and lets fly from the edge of the area with the ball seeming to move in the air, prompting Romain Salin to make an unorthodox save before one of his defenders hacks the ball out for a corner which Maritimo deal with.
1min: Newcastle are in their black and white home kit tonight, rather than their fluo-lime European strip, and it's the Magpies who get us started in front of what looks like the lowest crowd of the campaign so far at St. James' Park. Maritimo are in red and green, and attacking towards the Gallowgate end in this first period.
