Maritimo v Newcastle: Seven Changes

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Club Reporter

Romain Amalfitano makes his full debut for Newcastle United as they travel to Maritimo in the Europa League on Thursday evening (6pm kick-off).

The summer signing from Stade de Reims is handed a starting spot at the Estadio dos Barreiros, in Madeira, for the Group D fixture.

Amalfitano will be deployed wide on the left of an attack-minded 4-2-3-1 formation, which sees seven changes from Monday's draw at Everton.

The back four, however, remains the same with James Perch, Mike Williamson, Steven Taylor and Davide Santon providing the Magpies' defensive unit.

They are in front of goalkeeper Rob Elliot, who makes only his second United appearance since arriving at the Club just over a year ago.

Gael Bigirimana and Dan Gosling will anchor Newcastle's midfield, with Gabriel Obertan, Haris Vuckic and Amalfitano in front of them supporting captain-for-the-night Shola Ameobi, who is the lone front man.

On the substitutes' bench there are places for youngsters James Tavernier, Shane Ferguson, Mehdi Abeid, Sammy Ameobi and 17-year-old Adam Campbell.

Vurnon Anita, who had flown out with the squad, has returned home early, as his girlfriend has gone into labour.
