Manchester City 3 (Aguero 10, Garcia 39, Y.Toure 78)
SECOND HALF UPDATES
90+3mins: Newcastle have gone toe-to-toe with the champions of England and on another day could well have had something to show for it, but this afternoon they've been beaten 3-1 by Manchester City. Alan Pardew's side started well before Sergio Aguero gave City the lead against the run of play, then were battling back when Javi Garcia headed home a second. Demba Ba's 11th of the season sparked another good spell from the Magpies, who were having all the play before Yaya Toure killed the game off 12 minutes from time. It's another defeat for the Magpies but there wasn't much wrong with the performance.
90+2mins: Marveaux works space on the edge of the box and sees his strike deflected wide. The Frenchman's corner then falls to Ameobi, who plays in Anita but his cross-cum-shot hits Ba to take it away from danger.
90mins: Fourth official Phil Dowd holds up the board to show there will be three minutes of added time.
87mins: Aguero is again just off target after racing goalwards as City broke at speed from a United attack; the Argentine burnt off Anita and with so many black and white shirts in the other half, it could easily have been a fourth but his dinked effort went the wrong side of the far post.
85mins: Gutierrez digs out a good cross from the left and Ameobi climbs above Clichy to get a header in, but can only direct it straight at Hart. City attack from the goal-kick with Aguero darting towards goal and curling inches wide of Krul's far post.
79mins: A substitution for each team sees Shola Ameobi replace Cisse for Newcastle and Joleon Lescott come on for Carlos Tevez for City.
78mins - MAN CITY GOAL (1-3): With Newcastle pushing men forward, City punish them with their first attack for some time; the game's best player, Silva, is involved again as he finds the overlapping Pablo Zabaleta and his low delivery is turned home by Yaya Toure who also on target in this fixture last season.
76mins: Anita does well on the right to get past Gael Clichy and find Gutierrez, whose cross-cum-shot is palmed out by Hart.
72mins: A substitute is substituted for City - Kolarov, who came on for Nasri on 37 minutes, is replaced in what looks like a tactical change, with Edin Dzeko coming on in his place.
69mins: Ba gets in a low shot which Hart gathers into his chest after more good play from United. Tiote won the ball in his own half before feeding Cisse, who in turn released Perch and he held off the attentions of Yaya Toure to slide in Ba to get his 20-yard strike away.
67mins: Silva's corner from the right is met by Garcia but this time he's under too much pressure to get a clear header in and his effort goes wide.
63mins: Newcastle keep City penned into their own half after another corner is only half-cleared and Coloccini scoops the ball up for Anita. whose shot is blocked. From the next flag-kick, Ba arrives at the far post and the ball falls for him to strike but it goes into the side-netting when some of the crowd thought it was in. United are really forcing the issue here.
59mins: Santon plays the ball inside for Tiote who again goes for goal, this time from nearly 30 yards out, but again the connection isn't right and it bobbles several yards wide.
58mins: Anita's right-wing corner is headed away by City but only as far as Tiote, who goes for a volley but screws it wide as his wait for a first United goal since that stunning equaliser in the 4-4 against Arsenal goes on.
57mins: Great goalkeeping from Krul as the Dutchman races off his line to thwart Tevez, who was racing onto a long ball but couldn't lift it over the keeper who had read the situation.
55mins: A booking apiece for Kolo Toure and James Perch. The Newcastle man had taken Yaya Youre out a few seconds earlier but referee Marriner allowed play to continue before awarding United a free-kick when Toure blocked off Gutierrez.
53mins: Chances at both ends as first Kolarov sends a low shot too close to Krul and then Anita slides the ball in to Cisse, whose powerful shot from inside the box flies just over - there seems to be a new belief about the Magpies in this second period.
51mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-2): Ba has his 11th of the season with a neat header from 12 yards after Coloccini launched the ball into the box when a set-piece was only half-cleared by City. United's pressure has told and they're back in the game.
49mins: As United continue their strong start to the second half, Santon glides into the box before hitting the side-netting with his low shot.
48mins: Simpson tees up Tiote to swing in a fantastic ball which is met by the head of Ba at the far post but the Senegalese striker can't direct his effort on target and it goes over the bar.
46mins: Newcastle get the second half started and they're now attacking towards the Gallowgate - can those fans lift United and inspire them towards a stirring comeback?
FIRST HALF UPDATES
45+3mins: The champions Manchester City lead 2-0 at half-time with Javi Garcia's 39th minute goal seeming to take the wind out of Newcastle's sails somewhat after United had been battling hard to get back into the game. Half-time is probably quite welcome for Alan Pardew, whose side have done well for the most part but are up against an excellent team who are on top of their game today. Click here for the half-time report.
45mins: There will be three minutes of stoppage time at the end of the half.
39mins - MAN CITY GOAL (0-2): From the resulting flag-kick, Javi Garcia doubles the vistors' lead. He gets in a powerful header as he attacks the cross but Santon is well-positioned to clear off the line. He swings and misses, though, with the ball dropping past him and into the net. Newcastle were still very much in this game at 1-0 - now they are really up against it and perhaps United's best player this season will not be happy with his part in the goal.
38mins: Silva has been outstanding for City and after running at the defence, he slides in Tevez whose low effort is diverted wide by the trailing leg of Krul for a corner.
37mins: Aguero is booked after a foul on Tiote while City are forced into a change - Nasri suffered what looked like a dead leg after a clash with Davide Santon as the pair went in for a 50-50 tackle and Aleksandar Kolarov replaces him.
36mins: Today's attendance is 49,579 including 2,718 from Manchester City.
33mins: Cisse turns provider as he heads across goal for Ba, who has his back to goal but takes a touch and shoots on the turn but scuffs his effort somewhat and it dribbles wide.
31mins: Papiss Cisse drives just over after intially winning the ball with a sliding tackle near his own corner flag, then motoring towards goal as Fabricio Coloccini, Tiote, Gutierrez and Ba combined to tee him up. Cisse was at least 25 yards out but clearly only had one thing on his mind and it almost paid off.
27mins: Now Danny Simpson is booked very harshly for a foul on Silva - it was a foul but certainly didn't seem to warrant a yellow card for the Manchester-born right-back. Again, the free-kick is worked short and eventually finds Nasri on the right, whose low centre is placed just wide by Tevez.
25mins: City, with a somewhat makeshift defence, are struggling to deal with Williamson from set-plays - he heads Anita's free-kick back across goal and Hart has to use his feet to slide in and thwart Ba after Perch had got a flick. Then the ball was played back in for Williamson to meet on the half-volley and his effort was hacked off the line before at other end, Nasri sees an effort blocked by Jonas Gutierrez.
20mins: So nearly 2-0 after some stunning football from City; Silva is heavily involved in a flowing move full of triangles and one-touch play which eventually sees Nasri hit the post from a narrow angle before Aguero's follow-up is somehow blocked by Williamson virtually on the line. It was great last-ditch defending from the centre-back but the champions are proving to slick for Alan Pardew's side at the moment.
15mins: Mike Williamson is booked after upending Tevez just inside the United half and from the free-kick, City work the ball to Samir Nasri on the right-hand side on the box and Aguero just fails to connect with his driven cross towards the far post.
13mins: It takes a magnificent save from Tim Krul, low to his right from point blank range, to keep out Tevez after great work from David Silva, who had danced down the left and cut the ball back for the Argentine. Now the visitors are on top after that bright opening from the Magpies.
10mins - MAN CITY GOAL (0-1): The visitors take the lead against the run of play as they manage to beat the offside trap on this occasion. Yaya Toure's pass is superb and splits the defence, allowing Tevez to cross low for Aguero to tap into an empty net. Newcastle had started so well but find themselves behind. That, as they say, is why City are champions.
8mins: Cheick Tiote is robbed by Sergio Aguero, who crosses for compatriot Carlos Tevez. His shot is well blocked by Tim Krul but the flag was up for offside anyway, although it looked tight. That's just a reminder from City of the quality that they possess despite Newcastle's great start.pos
6mins: Anita's floated free-kick is met by the head of Mike Williamson at the far post and Hart just beats Demba Ba to the ball. Then Santon drives into the box and squares for James Perch, whose shot is blocked by Matija Nastasic. The home fans are loving this.
5mins: Vurnon Anita's left-wing corner almost goes straight into the top corner and requires a punch from Hart to keep it out. United are continuing to press the champions early on.
2mins: Cheick Tiote fizzes in a low cross from the right and Papiss Cisse meets it first time with an instinctive effort which Joe Hart brilliantly parries from point blank range - that was almost a dream start from the Magpies who have came flying out of the traps.
1min: In front of what looks like a virtual sell-out at St. James' Park, the game is underway as Manchester City take kick-off. They're attacking towards the Gallowgate end in the first half, in their sky blue shirts and white shorts, while Newcastle are in black and white.
