Kick-off 1.30pm
Dan King reports from St. James' Park ...
90+3mins - Martin Atkinson blows his whistle - it's finished 6-0 and Newcastle have proved a few doubters wrong this afternoon. It's something to really build on; now the challenge must be to maintain this level of performance throughout the season.
90+2mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (6-0): Andy Carroll has his hat-trick, the first he has scored for United. He looks every inch a number nine here. He starts the move, with a great ball out to Xisco on the left, and finishes it as he swoops in on goal and finishes from 12 yards. He has been superb this afternoon.
90mins - A minimum of three minutes of added time will be played.
89mins - Habib Beye, the former Magpies defender, is given the final couple of minutes as he replaces Ciaran Clark in defence. His arrival is greeted mainly with boos, with many fans clearly not forgiving the full-back for leaving United last summer.
86mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (5-0): Howay five-oh! Kevin Nolan grabs his second of the game, forcing home from close range after Shola Ameobi's header from a corner was parried by Friedel. It caps a brilliant display from The Magpies.
EXPERT COMMENT - FORMER NEWCASTLE DEFENDER AND CURRENT BBC RADIO NEWCASTLE PUNDIT JOHN ANDERSON: "I would never have predicted this scoreline before the game. It's been a fabulous performance from Chris Hughton's boys."
80mins - Jonas Gutierrez is given a well-earned rest, with Xisco coming on for the final ten minutes.
78mins - Nigel Reo-Coker is booked for a foul on Jonas Gutierrez. A free-kick is awarded on the very edge of the box, which Ryan Taylor strikes narrowly over, but it looked as though the offence could even have taken place in the penalty area.
76mins - Alan Smith and Wayne Routledge make way for Ryan Taylor and Shola Ameobi. Both have enjoyed great afternoons.
75mins - So close to a hat-trick for Andy Carroll, after Nolan had teed him up from Routledge's deep cross. However, a combination of Luke Young and Brad Freidel keep the ball out.
69mins - The Newcastle fans behind the Gallowgate end are now singing: "Andy Carroll, Andy Carroll, Andy Andy Carroll, he gets the ball, he scores a goal, Andy Andy Carroll," to the tune of the chant they once had for Andy Cole. Praise indeed for the young Geordie...
67mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (4-0): This is becoming a rout! Mike Williamson, up for a set-piece, keeps the play alive on the edge of the box with a clever flick and Andy Carroll is running in to volley home with a super finish from 12 yards. Franco Baldini, Fabio Capello's England assistant, is in the stands and he can't fail to have been impressed with United's number nine.
65mins - Nigel Reo-Coker is on for Villa, in place of John Carew who has had no change out of Mike Williamson and Fabricio Coloccini and, of course, skied that penalty in the first-half.
64mins - Alan Smith is yellow-carded for a foul on Ashley Young.
62mins - Kevin Nolan spots Wayne Routledge in space on the left and plays the ball for him to run onto. The jet-heeled wideman does just that and outstrips the visitors' defence before getting in a shot from the corner of the penalty area, but Freidel blocks it with his legs. Newcastle aren't content with just the three here, it seems.
57mins - Marc Albrighton shone for Villa on the opening day, but he's struggled to get into proceedings here due to the good work of Jose Enrique. And although he's certainly not been the worst player in claret and blue today, the young winger has been substituted, with Emile Heskey coming on to give them more presence up-front.
47mins - Andy Carroll lets fly from 25 yards with a low effort which is easily dealt with by Friedel, and United have again started the half well, with Joey Barton pulling the strings. The attendance, by the way, is 43,546.
Half-time report
45+2mins - The whistle blows for the break, and Newcastle are 3-0 up in their first home game of the season. United have been exceptional at times - let's just hope they can carry on this tempo and quality after the interval.
45mins - There will be two minutes of stoppage time.
39mins - James Perch goes into Martin Atkinson's notebook for a high tackle on Villa's Stephen Warnock.
37mins - Newcastle look dangerous every time they get the ball now. Kevin Nolan is put through down the right but as he races towards goal, Smith tangles with a Villa defender in the box. Surely a penalty - but the ref presumably plays the advantage as Nolan is still on the ball. However, his shot is saved by Friedel and hacked away.
34mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (3-0): And now it's three! Barton's corner is met well by Mike Williamson, who nods back across goal, and after Richard Dunne's awful miskick, Andy Carroll is able to half-volley home for his first of the season - and his first with the coveted number nine on his back.
32 - The two-goal advantage is preserved thanks to a great last-ditch block by James Perch, who slides in to deny Ashley Young when the winger looked set to tap from from five yards. Great defending from the right-back.
31mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (2-0): United are two up, and they could not deserve it more. It's a beautifully-worked goal, too, which doubles their advantage - with a touch of Latin flair. Jonas Gutierrez and Jose Enrique combine down the left, allowing Enrique to loft a ball towards the back stick. Andy Carroll shows great presence of mind to nod it back to Kevin Nolan, whose initial header is superbly parried by Friedel but he can only palm it straight back to the United captain, who heads home.
27mins - Alan Smith and Joey Barton are setting the tempo with some great tackles in the middle of the park. Smith slides in to rob debut boy Stephen Ireland, who in turn chops down United's vice-captain, and United win a well-placed free-kick. There's too much on Barton's delivery, but it's encouraging stuff in the Magpies engine room.
21mins - Some patient approach play from the visitors ends with Stewart Downing shooting wide from 18 yards.
18mins - Barton is rather harshly booked for a fractionally late challenge on Petrov, with both players going for the ball and the United goalscorer just being beaten to it.
12mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-0): Joey Barton isn't shaving his moustache off until United win a game - and he's clearly desperate to get rid of it because he's taken matters into his own hands here with a stunning goal. Almost 30 yards out, the midfielder lets fly and it arrows into the net with Brad Friedel beaten all ends up. What a goal!
9mins - VILLA MISS PENALTY - Stiliyan Petrov's raking throughball catches out the United defence and Ashley Young races through, and is brought down by Steve Harper. The United goalkeeper is not even booked, such is the angle that Young was at, but John Carew has the chance to give Villa the lead from the spot. However, the Norwegien's penalty is one of the worst ever seen at St. James' Park, flying high into the the Gallowgate end.
6mins - The first chance of the game goes to Newcastle, although it's more of a half-chance if truth be told. Joey Barton's right-wing free-kick is floated in nicely for Andy Carroll to attack, but he doesn't have the space for a clear header and it's off target.
TEAM NEWS
Newcastle field the same XI who started against Manchester United on Monday night. Danny Guthrie has narrowly lost his fitness battle, so misses out on the squad.
However, Peter Lovenkrands is amongst the substitutes having not been involved at Old Trafford with a groin injury.
Villa hand a debut to Stephen Ireland on his 24th birthday, who replaces James Milner in the side that beat West Ham 3-0 last weekend. Former Newcastle defender Habib Beye is on the bench.
