PLYMOUTH ARGYLE 0
NEWCASTLE UNITED 0
FA Cup Third Round
Saturday, January 2, 2010
Craig Hope reports from Home Park ...
NEWCASTLE United and Plymouth Argyle will need a replay to decide this Third Round tie after a goalless draw at Home Park.
The Magpies leave the South Coast having shaded the better of the openings and enjoyed their best period towards the end of the first half.
Shola Ameobi had the ball in the back of the net on the half-hour mark after Fabrice Pancrate had struck the post but the Frenchman was ruled to have fouled full-back Gary Sawyer in the build up.
Romain Larrieu then extended his arms to dive and turn Danny Guthrie's goalbound drive around the upright on 45 minutes,
And in first-half stoppage time Fabricio Coloccini shaved the base of the post with a volley after Argyle had failed to clear from a corner.
The second period offered little by way of real goalmouth incident but Larrieu again saved the home side when he backpedalled to fingertip Nicky Butt's dipping lob onto the crossbar.
It's the third season in a row that United have drawn nil-nil on Third Round day.
SECOND-HALF UPDATES (click refresh for latest)
Full-time, we'll need a replay to decide this one.
90+2min - Craig Noone replaces Alan Judge and this clock continues to tick towards a goalless conclusion.
90+1min - Another United corner winds up in the hands of Larrieu but the visitors remain camped in green territory.
The fourth official indicates an additional period of four minutes.
86min - Argyle owe a massive thanks to keeper Larrieu for keeping this game goalless; the French keeper backpedalling furiously to tip Nicky Butt's measured lob onto the crossbar and behind for a corner - the United skipper thought he'd scored! Again, though, the corner is cleared.
85min - United are enjoying all of the attacking territory and Carroll, from Taylor's cross, is denied when his downward header bounces up into the arms of Larrieu from just six yards out.
83min - Lovenkrands drives at the Argyle backline but his advances are cut short when Sawyer, attempting to stamp out the danger, connects with the Dane's ankle on the right-hand side of the penalty area. Again it's a great position to deliver but United fail to capitalise and the hosts clear.
82min - Rory Fallon sees yellow as he goes to ground in an attempt to dispossess Nicky Butt but the New Zealander merely succeeds in grounding the Toon skipper 25 yards from goal. United pack the penalty area with expectant bodies but Ryan Taylor's deft chip eludes all and drifts away for a goal-kick,
80min - United have a corner but that goes to waste when, worked short, Guthrie's cross is plucked to safety by Larrieu.
79min - Peter Lovenkrands is sent on in an attempt to find that winner with Fabrice Pancrate sacrificed.
78min - Is this game meandering towards a replay or can The Magpies find that elusive breakthrough?
75min - Hungarian Kadar is okay to resume and trots back into his central defensive position.
74min - David McNamee replaces Luke Summerfield for the hosts. Meanwhile, Tamas Kadar is receiving treatment just outside the United area after Fallon catches his ankle with a sliding challenge.
71min - And it is Jonas Gutierrez who will enter the fray with Danny Guthrie switching to a central role.
70min - Alan Smith has left the action looking rather dazed after a clash on halfway and he is led down the tunnell by United's medical staff; he'll have to be replaced.
68min - Nile Ranger's afternoon's work is done and he is replaced by Andy Carroll - can the Geordie striker spark a winner?
67min - With scant options ahead of him, Danny Simspon decides to go it alone and sets off on a forray through the middle of the park. The defender advances unopposed to the edge of the Argyle D but his left-foot strike is tame and dribbles wide - still, a purposeful burst from the Toon man.
63min - This game has descended into something of a scrappy affair; could United be headed for successive goalless draws?
60min - Clark looks to atone for his earlier scuff but somehow manages to better that gaff with a 25-yard shot which spirals away for a throw-in!
55min - Chris Clark escapes Ryan Taylor on the left but, with the home fans out of their seats as the Scottish winger makes strides towards the penalty area, their hopes are dashed when Clark miscues his delivery and the ball lands in the front row of Argyle supporters behind the goal.
51min - Karl Duguid and Nile Ranger are both flashed yellow cards following a skirmish on the far touchline with both players wrestling one another to the floor after a heavy challenge from the Argyle skipper.
49min - Guthrie's downfield ball swirls in the breeze and looks to have played in Ameobi only for Arnason to read the flight and recover to hack to safety.
United emerge for the second period with no changes for either side during the interval.
45+2min - Kar Arnason is the first man in the book for dissent after the Icelandic defender is ruled to have manhandled Ameobi in the left channel. And, from that free-kick, United come agonisingly close to seizing the lead; Guthrie's set-piece cleared only as far as Coloccini, on the penalty spot, who cushioned with his thigh before lashing a volley past the base of Larrieu's post.
There will be two added minutes.
45min - And Danny Guthrie goes close to finding a breakthrough when his rising drive from the edge of the area stings the palms of a diving Larrieu who manages to divert around the upright. Ryan Taylor centres but again it's a green head which gets there first to clear.
44min - United are finishing this half much the stronger.
40min - Ameobi is beginning to find some joy in the inside right channel and again weaves clear of green shirts before dropping a ball to the far post. Danny Guthrie is stretching and is unable to turn back into a gaping target, Larrieu stranded at the near post, with the midfielder's improvised back heel ending up in the side-netting.
37min - United's first corner arrives when Barker's wild swipe zips into the fans behind the goal after Taylor had delivered at pace to the near post. It is Taylor who centres but Barker makes amends for the hashed clearance with a strong header to avert the danger.
35min - Danny Simpson does well to force his way to the Argyle by-line before digging out a high cross with his weaker left boot, It's a decent ball from the United full-back but keeper Larrieu steps out to claim from Ranger on the edge of the six-yard area.
30min - United have the ball in the net when Ameobi prods into the empty target after Fabrice Pancrate had hit the post but Alan Wiley had already brought back play for a tug by the Frenchman on Sawyer - didn't look an awful lot wrong with that on second viewing.
28min - Ryan Taylor lashes a free-kick from deep into the danger zone, Fabrice Pancrate jumps on the penalty spot but fails to make contact and the ball bounces just inches wide of Romain Larrieu's far post with the French keeper beaten.
25min - Ameobi takes aim at the other end but gets his angles wrong and curls high and wide from 20 yards.
23min - Summerfield wedges a free-kick into the penalty area from the right but, when the ball bounces towards the open goal, Argyle hopes are dashed as referee Alan Wiley blows for an infringement on goalkeeper Tim Krul.
18min - There doesn't appear to be too much wrong with Guthrie'ankle as he clatters into Alan Judge on this near touchline leaving the on-loan winger grounded. The home fans bay for a yellow card but Alan Wiley shows leniency and gives the Toon man a ticking off.
16min - There's a break in play with Danny Guthrie down in the centre circle with what looks like an ankle problem. Physio Dave Henderson gives the thumbs up to an anxious United bench and it looks as though the midfielder will be okay to continue.
15min - The hosts win the game's first corner, delivered by Mackie, but Smith dives to head clear.
13min - But The Magpies soon fashion a real gilt-edged chance as Ryan Taylor whips in low from the right with the ball bouncing through to Fabrice Pancrate, unmarked at the near post, off the rugged surface. The Frenchman must be caught unawares, though, and snatches at a first-time effort with the ball bouncing clear off his standing leg - he should have done better.
11min - United are looking to feed a lot of balls into the feet of Nile Ranger and, thus far, the young striker has done well to hold up play and bring in his team-mates into the game - still no real chances of note for the visitors, though.
6min - Butt looks to spring Ameobi clear after a slip by Sawyer but the United striker is stopped in his tracks by a sliding Barker who leaves his man in a heap on the edge of the area - strong challenge.
3min - Butt is caught in possession 25 yards from goal and Mackie, seizing the loose ball, runs at a backpedalling Coloccini. The Argyle forward twists and turns and looks to have burst clear of the Argentine, and in on goal, only for Tamas Kadar to read the unfolding danger and arrive on cue to hack from the boot of the diminutive frontman,
The Pilgrims emerge from their team huddle to get us started attacking the end where the Toon Army are housed,
United, led by Nicky Butt, are kitted in their yellow change kit as the two teams trot from the tunnell.
There should be a close-to-capacity crowd inside the 19,500-seater Home Park with United's black-and-white-clad followers filling the Bark Park End away to our right.
The overnight frost which had left half of the pitch cased in white when the plastic covers were removed two hours ago still lingers in patches and the playing surface looks far from ideal.
CHRIS Hughton names a strong starting XI for this afternoon's Third Round clash despite making seven changes from the side which drew at home to Derby County on Monday.
As expected Steve Harper makes way for young gloveman Tim Krul, the Dutch stopper handed his third start of the campaign.
Tamas Kadar comes in for Steven Taylor at the heart of the defence, while Jose Enrique is also rested with Ryan Taylor reverting to left-back.
In midfield there's a recall for skipper Nicky Butt, Danny Guthrie and Fabrice Pancrate, with Kevin Nolan and Jonas Gutierrez also afforded a breather.
