Craig Hope reports from St.James' Park ...

FULL-TIME SUMMARY

NEWCASTLE United twice came from behind to take a share of the spoils in a pulsating affair at St.James' Park.

Both sides displayed an unyielding and admirable appetite for attacking football from the first whistle and the visitors took the lead on 13 minutes, Jonas Olsson hooking home from close range after Graham Dorrans had deliverd a teasing ball into the penalty area.

But the hosts drew level some 12 minutes later; Danny Guthrie executing an unstoppable free-kick from 25 yards for his third of the season.

The second half started in much the same vein as the first and The Baggies were ahead within 60 seconds when Roman Bednar headed his own rebound into the empty net after Steve Harper had repelled the Czech striker's initial effort.

Again, though, United pegged back Roberto Di Matteo's side and Peter Lovenkrands, playing just three days after the death of his father, flashed a header beyond Scott Carson from Jonas Gutierrez's centre on 55 minutes.

Either side had chances to win it as the game drew to a close and Ishmael Miller was guilty of a glaring miss when he prodded onto the post from two yards out with seven minutes remaining.

SECOND-HALF UPDATES (click refresh for latest)

There's still time for one last Jonas Gutierrez upfield burst but that ends in a desperate clearance from Tamas and referee Paul Taylor calls time on a pulsating affair.

90+2min - Ryan Taylor's free-kick from the East Stand touchline zips through a crowded penalty area before bouncing inches wide of the far upright - it must have taken a nick off a red shirt as the corner is awarded. From the flag kick, delivered by Danny Guthrie, Andy Carroll is bodychecked by Jonas Olsson but a well-placed Paul Taylor waves away United protest for a penalty - replays show that should have been a spot kick!

There will be four minutes added time - can United find a winner?

88min - Dorrans is clipped by Guthrie 25 yards out and West Brom have a free-kick. Dorrans fires straight into the black-and-white blockade and United scramble clear.

86min - Danny Simpson is replaced by Ryan Taylor.

83min - Ishmael Miller is guilty of a glaring miss from just two yards out as, from Thomas' low slide, the striker pokes onto the base of the post with the goal gaping. The danger is not over, however, and, from the rebound, Alan Smith bravely throws his body on the line to block from Dorrans' follow up on the penalty spot - Miller is left head in hands in a heap inside the area!

81min - Dorrans, a danger all night, twists one way and then the other before lashing narrowly wide from just inside the area. A corner is somehow awarded and United would have found themselves trailing for a third time had Olsson headed on target from the edge of the six-yard area.

79min - Danny Guthrie delivers a corner for United but the whistle blows for an infringement and The Baggies breathe a sigh of relief.

78min - Shola Ameobi makes way for United's first change with Andy Carroll entering the action - can the big man inspire a winner?

75min - Another yellow card - Graham Dorrans the guilty party this time for a tug on Enrique.

74min - Shola Ameobi is booked for a fairly innocuous trip, but, as referee Paul Taylor counts to five on his fingers, the United striker sees yellow for persistent fouling.

73min - If there is such a thing in this game then we're currently going through a "quiet period" with both sides perhaps recharging their batteries before only final push for a winner.

67min - Enrique roars by Jara down the left flank and speeds into the danger zone, The Spaniard shows the presence of mind to cut a ball back into the path of the arriving Kevin Nolan on the edge of the area, The Scouser controls a low side-footer on target but Scott Carson falls to smother - that was a chance!

65min - West Brom have a corner after Brunt's free-kick deflects up off the home wall. Danny Simpson, United's smallest defender, heads clear from Dorrans' centre.

63min - A rare break in play sees a bemused Roman Bednar replaced by Ishmael Miller.

62min - Tempers are beginning to flare and a reckless Gonzalo Jara lunge on Jonas Gutierrez is met with a yellow card from the top pocket of Paul Taylor - that could have been red!

60min - Still both sides throw men forward in serach of another and Jonas Olsson is booked as he upends Danny Guthrie to half a United attack.

55min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (2-2): Jose Enrique swings over a cross from the left and, despite travelling away from goal, Peter Lovenkrands manages to flash a header on target which Scott Carson can only flap into the back of the net - the Dane, whose father died on Friday, points to the heavens following his goal before receiving an almighty cheer from the Toon Army!

53min - Roman Bednar catches the boot of Steven Taylor and the scorer sees yellow for what was a dangerous challenge.

51min - United are on the back foot and Chris Brunt ripples the side netting with a low, drilled effort from 20 yards - this has been a far from ideal start to the second period for the hosts.

46min - WEST BROM GOAL (1-2): Graham Dorrans runs at a retreating United backline and drives unchallenged into the area before dinking a cross onto the head of Roman Bednar. The Czech striker sees his first effort palmed onto crossbar by the gloves of a desperate Steve Harper but the rebound drops onto the forehead of the Baggies striker and he is left with the simplest of tasks in nodding into the empty net from one yard out.

There is a light mist drifting into St.James' as United get us started for the second period.

FIRST-HALF UPDATES

45+1min - United again have Steve Harper to thank as he claws Thomas' deflected stab around the post after a swift breakaway by Albion. The hosts can only half clear from the corner and Harper is forced to push a fizzing Mulumbu drive from 20 yards up and over the crossbar. The Magpies clear from the flag kick and that brings a pulsating first half to close - 1-1.

There will be two minutes added time of what has been a truly exhilarating opening period.

41min - Quite a duel has developed between Ameobi and Tamas and the Romanian stands strong to deflect the striker's shot on the turn, from eight yards out, wide of the target and away for a corner. United work short and, when Guthrie's eventual delivery is cleared, the break is on for Albion. The visitors have bodies over and, after Dorrans flicks a clever pass inside to Brunt, the midfielder unleashes a low strike from 20 yards. The effort looks to be drawing wide until Roman Bednar, unmarked 12 yards out, improvises to turn an audacious back heel towards the bottom corner. Steve Harper, though, is alert to the danger and throws his frame to the base of the post to keep out.

38min - Guthrie drives into the penalty area down the right and wins a corner off Cech. It is the scorer who centres but Steven Taylor, despite climbing above the bald head of Bednar, can only loop a 12-yard effort high and wide of Scott Carson's goal.

35min - Chris Brunt looks to match Danny Guthrie's earlier free-kick exploits and goes desperately close with a curling effort from all of 30 yards which has Steve Harper scrambling across his target, the ball bouncing inches wide of the United target.

32min - Thomas forces his way past Simpson on the left and when he crosses low towards the near post it's Taylor who extends a leg to prod away for a corner. Dorrans hoists high into the area, Harper comes to punch but still the danger is not clear. Again the ball is lifted into the mix and it's a home boot which emerges from the pack to poke behind for a flag kick. Referee Paul Taylor spots a foul from Dorrans' centre and United have a free-kick.

28min - Both sides have corners in quick succession but defenders come out on top on each occasion and the scores remain level.

25min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-1): The answer is yes they can! Shola Ameobi is tumbled by a clumsy Mulumbu challenge 25 yards out and it's Danny Guthrie who steps up to unleash a dipping effort above the wall and into the far corner beyond a leaden footed Scott Carson - what a strike!

24min - This has been a frenetic opening and now we're United turn the screw - can they find a leveller?

21min - Former Auxerre man Tamas is treading a fine line and, after a hefty challenge on Lovenkrands which ultimately won the ball, skipper Scott Carson has a word in the ear of his centre-back.

18min - Romanian defender Tamas barges through Shola Ameobi on the left flank and duly becomes the first man to enter the referee's notebook. Guthrie's stooping ball from the free-kick is plucked to safety by Scott Carson.

17min - The home side are under the cosh and are forced to defend another corner with the head of Nolan this time clearing the threat.

13min - WEST BROM GOAL (0-1): Ameobi and Nolan cross wires from Cech's cross and the result is a corner to West Brom. Brunt's deep delivery is retrieved by Graham Dorrans on the East Stand touchline. He works a yard inside Kevin Nolan before sweeping a cross to the edge of the six-yard area where Jonas Olsson, ghosting in on the shoulder of Ameobi, applies the slightest of touches to steer beyond Harper with his left foot.

12min - This has been a pulsating start; you feel it's only going to be a matter of time before either side breaks the deadlock.

8min - This is end-to-end stuff and Albion fashion a chance of their own at the other end; Slovenian Koren drawing an incisive ball back from the by-line with Taylor doing well to divert Dorrans' 12-yard stab up and over the crossbar, West Brom are livid, however, when referee Paul Taylor award a goal kick.

5min - United carve open the Baggies backline as Nolan, receiving a low pass from Enrique, threads a ball inbetween red shirts for Ameobi to chase. The striker holds off Tamas before sliding across the face of goal, Lovenkrands charges in looking to connect but the grounded Dane is inches away from turning beyond Carson and the visitors survive.

1min - Steven Taylor takes no chances with a dangerous Brunt delivery from the right and heads away for a corner. The Northern Irish wideman delivers and a combination of Smith and Guthrie, both with headers, avert the danger.

A chorus of whistles greets The Baggies on the formation of a team huddle prior to kick off, and it is the visitors who get us underway attacking the Gallowgate End.

A crisp January air greets the sides as they emanate from the Milburn Stand tunnel but their is certainly nothing frosty about the reception afforded to United's stars from the home fans.
