Crew president and general manager Mark McCullers said: "We are pleased once again to bring top-flight international soccer right here to Columbus and to provide the best competitive challenge for our team. The English Premier League is arguably the best league in the world and Newcastle United is one of its most storied clubs."

The Black and Gold have played a number of Premier League clubs in recent years, beating Leeds 2-1 in 1997, overcoming Fulham 2-1 in 2005 and drawing 1-1 with Everton in 2006. In 2007, they lost 3-1 to Aston Villa and a year later they lost by the same score to West Ham.
