Joey Barton was Sam Allardyce's second signing as manager of Newcastle United on 14 June 2007 when the Huyton-born schemer put pen to paper on a five-year-deal at St. James' Park, joining for a fee of £5.8m from Manchester City.

Joey, an attack-minded combative midfielder who made his full England debut last season against Spain, is a product of City's Academy.

He made his Premier League bow for Manchester City at the Reebok Stadium back in April 2003 - and scored his first goal for the Club in the 2-0 league win over Spurs in only his third game for the Blues.

He continued his run of good form at the start of the 2003/04 season and as a result, Joey was rewarded with a call up to the England U21 squad for their Euro qualifiers against Macedonia and Portugal, scoring once in the game against the Portuguese at Goodison Park - one of his teammates that day being United striker Shola Ameobi.

Ever-present in the City side in 2005/06, he began to weigh in with a few goals, most memorably a 30-yard screamer in the 3-2 win over Charlton, indeed Barton ended the season as third top scorer at the Club and last season, his six league goals saw him City's top scorer as he made 33 starting appearances for the Blues in the Premiership.

Missed the start of the 2007/08 campaign with a broken metatarsal suffered at Carlisle on 21 July 2007.
