James, Leeds born and bred, joined The Magpies on 2 July 2004, signing a five-year contract.
A very promising left sided midfielder cum winger, James was fast-tracked into the Leeds first team squad during the 2002/03 season. Possessing an abundance of skill and a good reader of the game, he made his full debut as a substitute at West Ham in November 2002 to become the second-youngest player to play in the Premiership (behind Coventry City's Gary McSheffrey who was 16 yrs 198 days old).
At 16 yrs and 309 days, James was also the second youngest player to represent Leeds United, behind the legendary Peter Lorimer. Milner impressed for the England U17 side in 2002 and his mature performances helped him force his way into senior football at such a young age.
He went on to break Wayne Rooney's record as the youngest ever Premiership scorer by four days, aged just 16 and 357 days when he secured a win for Leeds at Sunderland in December. 2002. At the start of the 2003/04 he was told he would be used sparingly in a 'substitutes role, but under caretaker manager Eddie Gray, he made the left-wing position his own and continued to improve with every game, despite the team suffering relegation in May 2004. All in all he made 30 Premiership appearances in 2003/04 for Leeds, scoring three times before his move to Tyneside.
James impressed in United's 2004 pre-season tour of the Far East where he also netted in the 1 - 1 draw against Kitchee in Hong Kong, and went on to make 40 appearances for the Magpies throughout 2004/05.
After representing England Under 20s in the Toulon International Tournament in June 2005 James spent the 2005/06 season on loan at Aston Villa but returned with a vengeance to have a terrific 2006/07 season at St. James' Park, 53 appearances with some cracking goals too, notably a thunderbolt against Manchester United on New Year's Day.
James finished the season at the European U21 Championships in Holland where he played a major part in England reaching the semi finals, before agonisingly losing out 13-12 on penalties to the host nation.
Signed a new four-year contract with United on 12 July 2007. Broke the record for England U21 Caps (30) v Montenegro on 7 September 2007 (now 31).
