Pic Special: August And September

There was plenty of optimism throughout August and September following the previous season's fifth-placed finish, and the campaign could barely have got off to a better start as Newcastle beat Tottenham Hotspur on the opening day at St. James' Park - watched by a trio of Olympians.

United were back in Europe too, and after a 1-1 draw at Atromitos they reached the group stages with a 1-0 win in the second leg, although Alan Pardew's side were beaten 2-0 away to European champions Chelsea despite the efforts of Joe Allon, a half-time guest on the pitch.

Hatem Ben Arfa's spectacular strike gave the Magpies a draw against Aston Villa as the players paid tribute to stricken colleague Ryan Taylor, before another point was secured at Everton thanks to a Demba Ba double. Then came a 0-0 draw at Maritimo - a steady start to the Europa League campaign proper - and a 1-0 home win against Chris Hughton's Norwich.

Manchester United knocked Newcastle out of the Capital One Cup but a hard-fought draw at Reading meant it was a solid, if unspectacular, opening two months.

As ever, Club Photographers Ian Horrocks and Serena Taylor were there every step of the way, and have created this gallery of their snaps.
