Yohan Cabaye trained with the rest of the Newcastle United first-team squad on Thursday morning as he nears a comeback after nearly two months on the sideline.

The Frenchman underwent groin surgery in November but has stepped up his regime this week and could be involved in Saturday's Barclays Premier League trip to Norwich City.

His compatriot and close friend Mathieu Debuchy was also on the pitch at the club's Benton training ground and is expected to make his Magpies bow at Carrow Road, while former England defender Gareth Southgate was an interested observer.

Until recently the Football Association's Head of Elite Development and now a successful television pundit, Southgate is a close friend of United goalkeeping coach Andy Woodman and also played with Alan Pardew at Crystal Palace and Steve Stone for his country.
