United's young guns were dealt a 2-0 defeat by Bordeaux on Thursday night in their final Europa League Group D fixture.

Already qualified for the knockout stage of the competition, manager Alan Pardew shuffled his pack, giving game time to the likes of Shane Ferguson, James Tavernier, Sammy Ameobi, Gael Bigirimana, Nile Ranger and Mehdi Abeid.

Two goals from Cheick Diabate condemned them to a first European loss of the season, but the Magpies were not outclassed by any means and could have snatched a result, with Shola Ameobi, Ranger and Abied all going close.
