Pic Special: St. James' Park Is Back
Champagne corks were popped on Wednesday to celebrate the official return of St. James' Park.
Last week, digital finance company wonga.com were announced as Newcastle United's new commercial sponsor, and will have their name on the Magpies' shirt from the start of the 2013/14 season.
In a significant additional deal, however, Wonga also purchased the stadium naming rights and gave it back to the fans - immediately reverting its name to St. James' Park.
United boss Alan Pardew and Club legends Peter Beardsley and Bob Moncur were on hand on Wednesday to help with the unveiling of the re-erected original sign, and fans also gathered to celebrate the occasion.
One of those, Tom Rose, from Heaton, told nufc.co.uk: "It's great news to have the ground back to St. James' Park.
"And a lot of credit should go to Wonga for giving us this name again. They understood what the fans wanted and they did it for us.
"It's great timing ahead of Sunday's derby against Sunderland. Last season on the eve of the derby we had good news about Tim Krul and Coloccini signing new contracts, and this year we have this.
"Hopefully it will give everyone a boost and help us get all three points."
