Despite the presence of Sammy Ameobi making his first appearance since July, Newcastle's under-21 side slipped to their first defeat of the season against Southampton on Friday night.

Ameobi played the full 90 minutes after recovering from a hamstring problem but even he couldn't help the Magpies maintain their winning start to the campaign as Sam McQueen scored the only goal of the game for the Saints.
