Young forward Sammy Ameobi made his return to training on Wednesday morning following a hamstring injury.

The 20-year-old has been out of action since United's pre-season trip to Portugal, where he picked up the knock during training, but was back with a ball at his feet at the Club's Benton-based Training Centre.

While a number of his teammates are away on international duty, Ameobi and the remainder of the squad were put through their paces by Magpies manager Alan Pardew and his coaching staff.

With a Capital One Cup trip to Manchester United just around the corner, as well as Europa League fixtures and their regular Premier League schedule, a fit-again Ameobi could be an important player for Newcastle over the coming months.
