United got their 2012/13 campaign off to the best possible start on Saturday - with a 2-1 home win over Tottenham Hotspur.

In front of a sell-out crowd at the Sports Direct Arena, forwards Demba Ba and Hatem Ben Arfa found the back of the net for the Magpies, with Jermain Defoe providing a brief response for the visitors.

Ba put Newcastle ahead ten minutes into the second half with an outstanding curled effort, finishing off an impressive team move involving Ben Arfa, Yohan Cabaye and Danny Simpson.

Defoe levelled for Spurs when he prodded home a loose ball after goalkeeper Tim Krul had kept out his initial header.

But that equaliser lasted no time at all, and when Ben Arfa was felled inside the box he picked himself up to slot home the resulting spot-kick and seal all three points.
