Papiss Cisse

In the latest of an occasional feature on nufc.co.uk, we pick our top five on a host of Newcastle United topics. After Papiss Cisse's latest stunning strike against Southampton Sunday, DAN KING takes on the task of picking the Senegalese star's best goals so far...

With 19 goals in 39 Barclays Premier League games in a period of just over a year, there's no doubt that Papiss Cisse is a great goalscorer. But it also had to be said that he's a scorer of great goals and he has scored some stunning efforts since joining Newcastle from Freiburg in January 2012.

Not all of his goals have been spectacular, of course - he scored against West Bromwich Albion in October using his backside - but more often than not there is plenty to admire when the Senegalese striker finds the net.

On Sunday, he almost broke the net with his swerving half-volley against Southampton and so we thought it was about time we chose the best of his goals so far. And although the winner may not come as too much of a surprise, they're all worth reliving again.

After the enjoyable job of watching them all, these are our top five Cisse strikes to date - and here's to many more.

Number five - Swansea City away, 2011/12

Newcastle head to the Liberty Stadium at the weekend and when they were last there, the Magpies clipped the Swans' wings with a stylish double from their number nine.
Cisse had already given his side a first-half lead with a well-taken goal but surpassed it in the second half. Yohan Cabaye played a nice ball into his path just inside the box and Cisse controlled it expertly with his first touch before somehow scooping it over the helpless Michel Vorm from an acute angle with his second.
The Swansea goalkeeper couldn't get anywhere near the ball as it arced into the top corner to send the United fans behind that goal wild with delight. It was an audacious effort from a player in form and gave United a 2-0 win.

Papiss Cisse

Number four - Chelsea away, 2011/12

Cisse scored one of the best goals seen at Stamford Bridge last season - and it wasn't even his best goal of the day.
United headed to Stamford Bridge last May still chasing a place in the top four against a side who were to become European champions a few days later.
And their Senegalese striker gave them a 19th minute lead as he flicked up Davide Santon's pass from the left before smashing a shot from just inside the box past Petr Cech.
As if that wasn't good enough, even better was to follow later on.

Papiss Cisse

Number three - Aston Villa home, 2011/12

Start as you mean to go on, they say - and Papiss Cisse did exactly that on his Newcastle debut against Aston Villa.
The Geordie faithful had to wait a while to see their new striker as he headed out to the African Cup of Nations immediately after signing for the club, but was named on the bench last February four days after touching back down in England.
An injury to Leon Best gave him his opportunity after 14 minutes and it was one he quickly took, smashing a thumping strike past Shay Given with what proved to be the winner at the Gallowgate end.
Jonas Gutierrez swung over a cross from the left at chest height and Cisse controlled it before instantly half-volleying into the top corner from 16 yards.

Papiss Cisse

Number two - Southampton home, 2012/13

On Sunday, Cisse scored one of his best goals yet against Southampton and, just like the rest of the goals in this list, it was made all the better as it contributed towards three points.
United ended up winning 4-2 against the Saints but were tied at 1-1 shortly before half-time when Rob Elliot's long kick was allowed to bounce by the visiting defence. That proved fatal as Cisse sprinted onto it and, from nearly 30 yards, sent a dipping half-volley past Artur Boruc.
The goalkeeper had no hope of keeping it out as the ball scorched over his flailing arms - although the modest man from Dakar simply described it as a "nice goal."
In truth, though, no words could truly do it justice.

Papiss Cisse

Number one - Chelsea away, 2011/12

In the eyes of most pundits, this was the goal of the season for 2011/12 and no wonder - it defied the laws of physics.
United were already leading through Cisse's first goal against the Blues as the match entered stoppage time, and most players would have been content to head towards one of the corners with the ball.
But not Cisse. Shola Ameobi chested the ball down and, from a few yards outside the left-hand angle of the box, the number nine sent an improbable first-time rocket with the outside of his right boot into the far corner, the ball veering away from poor Petr Cech who fell to the ground as he tried to prevent it from whistling past him.
