Spennymoor Town 4 (Cogdon, Taylor, Lynch, Roberts)
Newcastle United Under-21s 1 (Heardman)

Former Newcastle junior Dan Taylor returned to haunt his old Club as Peter Beardsley's under-21s lost to Northern League Division One champions Spennymoor Town on Wednesday night.

The striker, released by United in 2012, was among the scorers for Jason Ainsley's side, who look well-equipped to challenge for promotion from the Evo-Stik First Division.

Veteran frontman Gavin Cogdon had opened the scoring for the hosts before Tom Heardman levelled.

But then Taylor prodded home from close range in the second half and Craig Lynch added a third soon afterwards and Michael Roberts wrapped up the scoring in United's final friendly of the summer.

Kick-off was delayed by five minutes due to the queues outside but Spennymoor, in their black and white stripes, quickly took the lead as a swift move down the right was finished by Cogdon.

Only Gael Bigirimana and Shane Ferguson boasted senior experience for Peter Beardsley's young side but they quickly responded when Heardman pounced from six yards.

Taylor then tested Freddie Woodman before Liam Smith fired straight at the home side's trialist goalkeeper from distance and Heardman headed over.

United started the second period brightly, too, with Smith sending a drive inches wide and Callum Roberts seeing an effort cleared off the line.

But then Taylor arrived from nowhere to restore Spennymoor's lead and it was soon 3-1 as Lynch beat Woodman with a towering header.

Beardsley's boys rallied as substitute Greg Olley weaved his way towards goal but his shot was pushed over and Heardman headed off target from the resulting corner.

Callum Roberts and another sub, Jonathyn Quinn, came close too, but instead it was Spennymoor who added another as sub Michael Roberts cut in from the right and fired beyond Woodman.

Smith brought another save from the Spennymoor keeper, then Olley was denied after another decent run in the last minute, but the non-league side were worthy winners.

United begin their Barclays Under-21 Premier League campaign at Bolton on Monday evening.
