England winger Andros Townsend scored one and made two as Tottenham beat Newcastle in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League on Tuesday.

The match, originally scheduled for Monday night at Bishop's Stortford's ProKit UK Stadium, had been postponed shortly before kick-off and then hastily rearranged for the following afternoon at Spurs' training ground, thus saving the Magpies a wasted trip.

But it was still a long journey home despite Michael Richardson scoring on his return from a loan spell at Accrington Stanley.

The home side took the lead after just 19 seconds as Townsend - starting as an over age player on his comeback from injury - crossed for Souleymane Coulibaly to slot past Jak Alnwick.

And Townsend got his own name on the scoresheet in the 22nd minute after cutting in from the left and firing home with a low, dipping shot.

Two minutes later, Townsend's cross caused havoc and Kenny McEvoy was there to take advantage and in the 27th minute, Harry Kane turned and sent a stunning shot beyond Alnwick.

It would have been easy for the Magpies to collapse but they responded well, with Richardson netting from distance in the 37th minute.

But there were no further goals in the second half as Newcastle's four-game unbeaten run came to an end.
