Chelsea Under-21s 1 (Boga)

Alan Pardew watched a strong Newcastle under-21 side draw with Chelsea at St. James' Park.

United took a 14th minute lead through Adam Campbell, who played a clever give-and-go with Brandon Miele before sending a low shot past Jamal Blackman.

He was one of eight players with first-team experience in Willie Donachie and Peter Beardsley's side, with Sylvain Marveaux, Gabriel Obertan, Massadio Haidara, Sammy Ameobi, Gael Bigirimana, Paul Dummett and Curtis Good the others, and after a quiet opening Campbell broke the deadlock.

Isaiah Brown forced a great save from Jak Alnwick soon afterwards, then Obertan saw a goalbound shot blocked after great work from Ameobi.

For the Blues, Islam Feruz blazed over when well placed then Brown came close again. And as half time approached, Lewis Baker was denied by a stunning stop from Alnwick.

But the keeper could do nothing to prevent Boga from forcing home from close range four minutes before the break.

And the number ten fired narrowly over before Feruz was also just off target as Chelsea finished the half on top.

John Swift threatened twice at the start of the second period - first Alnwick held his powerful free kick, then he shot wide.

A fine tackle from Chelsea skipper Nathan Ake prevented Campbell from grabbing his second before Miele's corner was flicked on by Lubo Satka but Good's shot on the turn was saved.

Alnwick made another excellent stop at the opposite end from Alex Kiwomya, then the same player blazed high and wide.

In the final minute, substitute Rolando Aarons split the visiting defence with a superb pass for Campbell, but the striker shot wide of the near post.
