Newcastle United Under-21s 2 (Armstrong, Vuckic)

With bonfire night just around the corner, there were fireworks as Newcastle's under-21s took on Aston Villa at Burton Albion's Pirelli Stadium.

Adam Armstrong gave United a fourth minute lead as he dinked the ball over Benjamin Siegrist for his sixth Barclays Under-21 Premier League goal of the campaign.

He continued his fantastic form in his first match back after scoring six goals in the space of a week for England under-17s.

But the advantage was short lived as Calum Robinson equalised three minutes later for Gordon Cowans' side.

Adam Campbell curled a shot into Siegrist's arms before Villa began to dictate possession, with Jordan Graham firing over and Lewis Kinsella forcing Jak Alnwick into a smart save at his near post.

Graham then missed a great opportunity for the Villans as he poked the ball wide from close range before Daniel Johnson found Graham Burke, whose piledriver crashed back off the underside of the crossbar.

The same player was then denied by a fine sprawling stop from Alnwick but Haris Vuckic was unlucky when his low, hard drive was pushed away by Siegrist.

However, Villa took a deserved lead in the 39th minute when James Morgan put the ball past his own goalkeeper as he went to defend Liam Bateman's low cross from the right.

In stoppage time, Graham burst down the right and saw his cross flash across goal but fortunately for United, nobody could get a touch.

Willie Donachie and Peter Beardsley made a double change at the break, with Olivier Kemen and Greg Olley replacing Alex Gilliead and Jonathyn Quinn, and the Magpies started the second half strongly.

In the 49th minute, debutant Kyle Cameron's low cross from the left fell to Campbell but his shot on the turn flashed agonisingly wide.

Kemen was caught in possession as Burke forced Alnwick into another important block but in the 65th minute, Lubo Satka clipped the heels of Graham as he sprinted into the box and Johnson smashed home from the spot.

In the 77th minute, there was action at both ends as Alnwick parried Robinson's shot before Newcastle raced up the other end and Campbell's lob was cleared off the line.

The Magpies grabbed a lifeline in the 79th minute, however, as Vuckic's curling effort crept past the unsighted Siegrist for the Slovenian's fourth goal in three matches at this level.

And they almost levelled with six minutes to go as Campbell's half-volley flew just wide.

That proved costly when, moments later, Robinson jinked into the box and fired past Alnwick to seal the win for the Villans.

To rub salt in the wounds, Robinson completed his hat-trick in stoppage time then Johnson scored his second and the hosts' sixth.
