Newcastle United Under-21s 2 (Amalfitano, Tavernier)

Peter Beardsley played for both sides as Newcastle United played the role of party poopers in Cambridge United's 100th anniversary celebrations.

A Magpies under-21 side, managed by Willie Donachie and Beardsley, travelled to the R Costings Abbey Stadium for a showpiece friendly match but it was their three most experienced players who stole the headlines.

Beardsley - at 52 by some way the oldest player in a young visiting line-up - played for almost half an hour in black and white before briefly pulling on the home side's amber colours while Romain Amalfitano and James Tavernier got the Newcastle goals.

Amalfitano has made four appearances for the first-team this season while Tavernier has made seven and the former gave United the lead after just two minutes after Jonathyn Quinn teed him up.

At the other end, Jonathan Mitchell made saves from Luke Berry and Liam Hughes but - after Brandon Miele had been denied by Jonathan Hedge - the Magpies keeper could do nothing to keep out Hughes' penalty after Miele was adjudged to have fouled Scott Garner.

In the 63rd minute, Beardsley came on in place of Steven Logan and he inspired a late United winner as Tavernier's cross floated straight in.

Beardsley immediately came off before reappearing seconds later for Cambridge, managed by former Newcastle Academy Director Richard Money, then after the final whistle the former England legend held a fundraising talk-in for the Blue Square Bet Premier outfit.
