England goalkeeper John Ruddy made his return from injury at Whitley Park - but was beaten twice as Newcastle United under-21s made it seven games unbeaten.

The once-capped Canaries stopper had been sidelined since November with a torn thigh muscle but made his comeback behind a young Norwich defence.

But he could do nothing to prevent Ireland youth international Brandon Miele from slotting past him in the 36th minute before Michael Richardson scored a great solo goal in the 55th minute.

Although Willie Donachie and Peter Beardsley's side dominated possession in front of 122 spectators, they failed to create much until Miele's neatly-worked opener.

Steven Logan fired well over the bar before Lubo Satka sent a downward header straight at the keeper, then Romain Amalfitano's blistering drive flew just wide.

But then Miele worked a clever one-two with Alex Gilliead and took the ball round Ruddy to make it 1-0.

Norwich tried to respond immediately through Jamar Loza, who burst through but saw his powerful drive from ten yards parried by Jak Alnwick.

On the stroke of half-time, captain Curtis Good limped off after a collision with Olu Durojaiye to be replaced by Kevin Mbabu, who made an eyecatching home debut.

Michael Clunan sent a shot straight at Jak Alnwick at the start of the second half but ten minutes after the restart Michael Richardson made it two with his second goal in three games since returning from a loan spell with Gillingham.

He weaved past two challenges and into the box before poking the ball past Ruddy.

It was mostly all United after that, with Gilliead shooting wide after a determined run and Miele dragging the wrong side of the near post after cleverly making space either side of Ewan McNeil's shot which curled just wide after he jinked infield.
