There was mixed injury news for Newcastle United as the Reserves drew 1-1 with Blackpool in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Bloomfield Road.

Northern Irish international Shane Ferguson made his first appearance of the pre-season campaign, playing for 70 minutes after recovering from the groin injury he sustained in training on the eve of the first-team's trip to Germany.

But defender Paul Dummett limped off with an ankle injury and now faces a race to be fit for the second-string's first game of the season, at home to Tottenham next weekend.

The home side included several players with first-team experience including Chris Basham, Elliot Grandin and Craig Cathcart, as well as new signing Isaiah Osbourne while Willie Donachie and Peter Beardsley had James Tavernier and Gael Bigirimana at their disposal as well as Ferguson.

Grandin saw an effort hit the woodwork and Tiago Gomes forced Jak Alnwick into a good save in the first half, but it was 0-0 at the break.

United were occasionally sloppy in possession although played well for the most part, but went behind to Seasiders midfielder Jamie Menagh's strike.

However, the Magpies were soon back on level terms as two substitutes combined and Dennis Knight headed home a cross from Alex Nicholson.

Newcastle United Reserves: (Starting XI) Jak Alnwick, James Tavernier, Curtis Good, Paul Dummett, Shane Ferguson, Marcus Maddison, Gael Bigirimana, Michael Richardson, Conor Newton, Bradden Inman, JJ Hooper
