Liverpool Reserves 1 (Ngoo 55)
Newcastle United Reserves 2 (Moyo 21, Abeid pen 33)
After ten Barclays Premier Reserve League games without a win, Newcastle's second-string got a well-deserved victory at Liverpool's Kirkby Academy.
On a positive afternoon which saw Conor Newton make his return from a knee injury and both Bradden Inman and Stephen Folan complete 90 minutes, Willie Donachie's side were the better side in the first half and then defended solidly in the second.
Yven Moyo scored the opener from left-back before Mehdi Abeid made it two from the penalty spot after Ryan Donaldson's surging run had been ended illegally by Conor Coady.
And although Michael Ngoo got one back, United rarely looked in serious danger of conceding a second and saw out the game with Liverpool's Jesus Fernandez shown a red card late on to compound the Merseysiders' misery.
SECOND HALF UPDATES
90mins - It's all over and Newcastle have ended their long winless Barclays Premier Reserve League run with a hard-earned victory at Liverpool. Yven Moyo and a Mehdi Abeid penalty gave United a 2-0 advantage and despite Michael Ngoo's goal at the beginning of the second half, Willie Donachie's men did enough to pick up three points for the first time since January.
86mins - LIVERPOOL RED CARD: Liverpool are reduced to ten men as Jesus Fernandez goes in late on Donaldson with a raking challenge from behind and referee Steven Copeland has no hesitation in sending him off. It wasn't a great tackle by the Reds midfielder and Donaldson is fortunate that he was not too badly hurt. Jesus by name, perhaps, but not by nature on that evidence and now Newcastle have an extra player for the remainder of this match.
81mins - Ngoo's low ball from the left sneaks across the ground all the way to Sterling at the far post, but the highly-rated winger's composure deserts him and he shanks the ball over the bar.
80mins - Adam Morgan replaces Eccleston - who has probably been Liverpool's main threat.
70mins - Ryan Donaldson is booked for dissent after a decision went against him - but that just shows how determined Newcastle are to win this game after failing to register a victory since January.
61mins - Willie Donachie makes his second change of the day as Alex Kitchen replaces Alex Nicholson, possibly with tomorrow's big Premier Academy League clash against Barnsley in mind.
60mins - Stephen Folan had been out of action since November until he made his comeback against Manchester United last week and he shows just how much he's been missed with a superb last-ditch tackle on Eccleston, who was clean through. Great defending from the big Irishman.
55mins - LIVERPOOL GOAL (1-2): Yven Moyo scored the first goal for Newcastle but he'll be disappointed with his role in this one as Liverpool get a route back into the game. The Frenchman, playing at left-back today, dallied on the ball allowing Raheem Sterling to rob him and slide the ball across for substitute Ngoo to stab home.
49mins - Looking to start the half off well and get back into this game, Liverpool carve out a chance for Eccleston but Jak Alnwick makes a fine block.
46mins - Having barely wasted a pass in his first 45 minutes of the season, Conor Newton is replaced by Steven Logan while Liverpool bring on Michael Ngoo for Krisztian Adorjan.
FIRST HALF UPDATES
45+2mins: It's half-time and the Magpies lead 2-0. They just seem to want this more than the Reds while the presence of Mehdi Abeid and Conor Newton has certainly helped so far.
45mins: There will be two minutes of stoppage time at the end of the half.
41mins: Folan's attempted clearance is charged down by Nathan Eccleston, who then proceeds to ignore several options in the middle and go for goal with Alnwick parrying his shot at the near post. From the resulting corner, Stephen Sama ghosts in and heads just wide.
33mins: NEWCASTLE GOAL (0-2): Newton breaks up play and gives the ball to Donaldson, who embarks upon the kind of direct run which has became his trademark and is only ended by the trailing leg of Conor Coady. It's a clear penalty and Mehdi Abeid steps up to send Gulacsi the wrong way. It's 2-0 to Newcastle but they won't be getting carried away just yet - they were three up in their last game against Manchester United and went on to lose 6-3.
26mins: A spot of ping-pong in the Liverpool box as Donaldson sees his shot blocked before Abeid follows up from 25 yards but puts it too high.
22mins: After Stephen Folan has a foul harshly given against him on the edge of the atea, Krisztian Adorjan steps up to take the free-kick but curls it over the bar.
21mins: NEWCASTLE GOAL (0-1): The game suddenly comes to life as Yven Moyo opens the scoring with a well-taken strike following sustained Magpies pressure. The ball bobbled about before falling perfectly for the Frenchman to send a sweet strike into the bottom corner, past Peter Gulacsi.
10mins: It's been a low-key start here with neither keeper having made a save yet. Ex-Reds Nigel Clough and John Aldridge are both here but they've seen nothing to excite them yet.
1min: We're underway with frequent showers of rain falling at Liverpool's Kirkby Academy. Both sides are in their home kits with Conor Newton making his first appearance of the season for Willie Donachie's Newcastle.
